had never ridden before but my first bike was and still is an 06VFR. Got it in July '06 and have put on some 46,000km. Back when I bought it, it went something like this..."I'm buying a bike" We were happily married for 20 years at that time and still are. SHe has no intentions to ever ride this with me and this is fine.

For those ignorant folks I would challenge them to ride a motorcycle even just for a hour and realize the thrill and excitement that 4 wheels will never provide.

I'm a "born again" motorcycler. I always had cars and my dream car was a Ferrari F355. Motorcycles never registered on my radar and I thought they were just too unpractical and dangerous.

Well, one day I borrowed my roomie's motorcycle since he was borrowing my car to get groceries. All I wanted to do was run to the bank and make a quick deposit. I should have been gone for about 15 minutes but I ended up driving around for almost a hour.

I wasn't hauling ass since I was new and it was someone else's bike but I loved how you can experience the sensory delights such as wind blowing, smelling fumes, feeling bumps on the road. I love how the motorcycle engages you instead of making you an observer in a cage.

I'd challenge those chicks to even ride a scooter around town and they can see why we love motorcycling.

Some folks are too chickens*** to try anything to exhilarating. If they won't take the plunge and learn how to ride a bike and THEN make a judgment on it being dangerous, that's their problem, right?

They are impractical...I think it adds to the fun

You guys should have heard the spiel my family gave me when I came home with bike out of nowhere. Nobody approved and that's still the case, they just more or less tolerate my riding.

People look at me differently now, when I walk into a store with a helmet in hand I get looked at like I'm some degenerate hellbent on impaling myself into a wall. When really, I'm just a computer geek who thinks 4 wheels is too many.

    Great idea.

Overheard one of my wifes friends say to her a while back " I would never let my husband ride a motorcycle " told my wife afterwards I would never have been her hen pecked castradi husband in the first place, must admit an immediate bitch slap may have been a better option.

Even though bikes don't interest her luckely my wife understands my love of riding, dosn't stop her making the odd "that bitch" comment about spending more time waxing the VFR than I do shmoosing her though....

    GREAT THREAD!!!

I think it is that caring nurturing side of some ladies that makes them want to avoid all risk to things they love. Sometimes it goes so far as to have them cut off part of someone's livelihood to protect it from danger.

Men marry women thinking they'll never change.
Women marry men thinking they'll change them.

A fun way to deal with the jealous wife is to ask if she wants to have a three-some, then toss her the helmet you got her. Then it is her choice to not join in the fun. My wife rides once or twice a year, but has all her stuff.

    Lgn,
You may be on to something with this. Several years ago my wife just kinda out of blue looked at me and said "You're never going to need me the way I want you to, are you?" doing my best not to make the situation worse I think I just responded with "Uh". We're still married so I assume she got over it.
As far as the bike goes, her response to my buying the VFR was an announcement that she wanted one.

Yeah, my wife sees my VFR as "the other woman", even though I've never had trace of infidelity in my life, ever. Sheesh.

Imagine her reaction when I get back from the war (3 weeks to go!!) and purchase a
BMW K1200R as my own personal atta-boy for not getting blown up.....

    She'll probably claim I'm a polygamist!!

LGN's QUOTE: Every path is only a path, and there is no affront, to oneself or any other, in leaving the path if that is what your heart tells you. Examine every path closely, and try it as many times as you feel necessary. Then ask yourself, and ONLY yourself, "Does this path have a heart?" If it does, it is a good path. If it doesn't, it is of no use.

Oh, GOOD KARMA! Now you are speaking my language! Dis is vhat I vant to do!
    Right arm!

But seriously folks...lots of good responses here. What is on display here is the typical American's tendency to be inappropriate and stick one's nose into other people's business. How dare someone else tell me (or you) not to ride a motorcycle, or to ride a bicycle in traffic, or eat sushi, or do anything. "Shut the f*** up" is the appropriate answer...well, maybe that isn't the best way. The best way is to say "it is my life, this is America :usa2: and it is inappropriate and rude for you to be asking these questions and trying to direct my life..."
Tell 'em Nungboy told you to stand up and be a boy, um, man...

I made sure that when i thought it was going to get serious with the girlfriend I told her I ride and I'll never give it up. Her response was when was I going to give her a ride?  Now my family was a different story. I actually had to hide the bike from my Mom because she cried every time i mentioned motorcycles.

I think any woman who thinks they can "change" their man by telling them they can't ride needs serious bitch slap! I would have walked if my they girlfriend and now Wife told me to sell my bikes!

Also Dr. Phil needs to stop sniffing that Oprah juice and get off the airwaves!

When I meet my wife I was riding a Yamaha Radian, and had been searching for a 1993 VFR that I could afford. a few weeks in to our relationship, I found a gem of a 1993 VFR. I didn't have the cash at the time to buy it, so my girlfriend (at the time), gave me the money to buy it. I paid her back in a couple weeks.

And we've been riding ever since, she took the MSF class and got her licence. We bought her a new Ninja 250, she put like 60 miles on it before she realize it can be dangerous to ride. If she were to wreck, she could damage her hands, she a CAD engineer, she kind of needs the function of her hands. She told me she was sorry that she didn't want to drive a bike. I told her that I had no problem with that, in fact I'd rather have her on the back of my bike. I've been riding since I was 11 yrs old, so that's like 30 yrs, I feel pretty comfortable on a bike.

So now we ride all the time, she actually like to ride more that I do. I don't like riding if it under 50 degrees and cloudy, I don't mind if it's in the 40's and sunny. So she'll bust my chops if I chicken out and would rather take the car somewhere.

FWIW, these are some cool chicks out there.

Sadly it wasn't always that way but time and aggression have beaten him down. Even though she controls all other space when she was going to take over his study I told her it would be a mistake to take it away as all men need at least a small cave to call their own.

the trend in america is to make the men more femenine. It aint flying in my part of town though. I love my bike. My girlfriend is ok with it. She knows it is dangerous, but knows im careful and is stoked for me to start hitting the track.

Someone made a comment a while back about them being called "donorcycles" if someone said that to me, they would most certainly get a slap with the quickness. So does any woman that would make you ditch your obsession for her! That is that.

Ive been in pieces several times, from snowboarding, from mountainbiking, from rock climbing, from diving, you name it. Life can hurt sometimes. It doesnt mean you stop living it.

This conversation makes me want to take a long ride.....

Something about reading through the replies in this thread brought something to mind...

I picked up my VFR from the dealer and rode to work. Naturally, like all new vehicles and bikes in particular, everyone wants to look at it. So I'm standing there with a couple of people, and one of the ladies I work with walks past and says, "That looks dangerous." I thought about it for about two seconds and replied, "It is dangerous. What's your point?" She got a blank look on her face and left.
