Well Im older and experience - and yes I wear the JVC ear phones while I listen to my music. Perhaps those that dont is good for them as they probably cant do the head pat and belly rub either .........

Ca. laws states that you can not have both ears plugged - one is ok, go figure. I ride with my JVC ear buds and tunes 90 percent of the time. One time being stopped an officer told me about the law but said he didnt care but other cops might. Its easy enough to pull them out of your ears while you are taking your helmet off anyways so they have no leg to stand on if they try to write you for it they could never prove it.

Good stuff...you guys crack me up.

Some good humor in these posts.

Pilots used to have the same debates about earplugs, headphones and music. At one time, very few pilots used earplugs or headphones for fear of not being able to hear noises coming from engines, etc. But they've found that using some hearing protection still allows you to hear background noises while reducing or eliminating hearing loss. Now I can't find a pilot that doesn't use either earplugs or headphones...or both. The first four years I flew I didn't wear earplugs or headphones and suffered a little hearing loss. So I only wear headphones when flying because the addition of earplugs cuts out too much noise.

Many private airplanes have intercom systems with music and some debate in that area still continues. I've seen a number of studies by the military and NASA on pilot focus, fatigue and sensory overload.

From what I recall, there are really only two issues with music...Is it distracting you from focusing on your primary task(s) and is it drowning out noises that you need to hear? If the answer is no to both of these questions, then it doesn't impact your perfomance in any way. Because everyone's noise environment (wind, motor, exhaust, road noise, etc) and ability to multi-task is different, the presence and level of music that impacts their performance will be different.

Hearing damage begins to occur somewhere around 85db...and hearing loss is cumulative...meaning you will continue to loose hearing if you continue to listen to noises over 85db for any prolonged period of time. So Rat, I'm not sure you're doing yourself any favors by avoiding earplugs in town if the noise level is above 85db...just get some earplugs that keep the noise threshold down far enough to avoid further damage, yet still allow you to hear background noise.

BTW, since humans have the ability for selective hearing, we can "tune out" any music we hear to focus on other things...just ask my wife. But it comes at the price of additional stress and fatigue. I find music distracting when riding around town since I need to focus most of my attention on potential threats. I'm also usually making more stops, so removing and replacing my Shure headsets and IPOD is a pain. But listening to music on the highway or through the twisties makes riding even more enjoyable for me. I just don't like it so loud that it drowns out everything else. I use a set of Shure 500PTH in-ear foam headsets which serve as both earplugs and headphones. The only thing that still annoys me is having to change the music level when the level of background noise changes. I'm hoping the Autocom intercom (with auto-volume) I will be installing will take care of that.

Honestly i have an mp3 player and i ride listening to music blasting just as i do in my truck. I am a welder and will prob be def from the suicide saws, skil saws, grinders. ect. ect. before the music.

As far as it depriving one of your senses. That's a weak arguement. Like saying deaf people shouldn't ride because they can't safely. On a BIKE there is no sense more important than your eyes. You should check your mirrors religiously.

No matter the situation your eyes are normally the first alert you get whether on a bike or in a cage.

I'm content with singing like a delusional American Idol contestant within the confines of my helmet. Guilty pleasure.

Even though I know no one can hear me through my full face helmet and exhaust note.... sometimes when I pull to a stop I have to check if the cute girl next lane over with her windows down isn't looking at me funny.

Just to throw my 2 cents in here, I only listen to music when I'm driving long distances, never ever around town, and I never adjust volume or fast forward music or mess with the mp3 player at all when I'm riding. I have the in the ear headphones that seal out all other sounds much like earplugs do, so sometimes I'll wear them even without music playing.

No, they are the standard in ear ones made by skull candy, they are similar in feel at least to the cheapie in ear foam ear plugs. I saw the ones you're talking about this weekend at the motorcycle expo in Atlanta, they are expensive!

I didn't read every response on this thread, but I'm gonna reply anyway.
I installed speakers in my helmet(Shoei Multitec) in the depressions that were made for them. I put my ipod on shuffle, set the volume, and put it in my inside pocket of my jacket. I use it on my commute to work(@ 20 miles) and when I just go joy riding. I ride in heavy traffic and on rural roads. Not once has it kept me from hearing cars, dogs, etc. I keep my volume to where I can hear it, but its not deafening when stopped. I don't appreciate being called a non rider by people who think they know everything. It irks me when someone tries to help, but does it in a way that seems like their way of riding is the only way and if you don't agree, then you're a moron. I don't tell you that you can't ride in a speedo if you want, so don't say anything about my music. I may not agree with what some people do, but I don't preach to them about it. OK rant done.
