What my Gen 5 reads is about 11.8 to12V even, with the key on, about 13 with it idleing and goes rock solid to 14.1 when reved. Cant say what it reads on the road as I've not taken it out yet, I bought the bike in the fall and as a precaution I bought the latest OEM regulator with info and pictures from here (I think the guys a pilot?)as well as a datel meter. Do your volt checks right at the battery with the leads scratched into the lead bits. The ground for the meter doesn't necessarily have to go all the way back to the battery, a suitable ground to tap into would also be found in the harness as well; they're all over the place for lights etc, just don''t be afraid to untape the big bundle where it's easy to get at and unfurl the wires to get access, if you do a nice job (in this case solder and good heat shrink are your friend) and tape it up pretty with quality harness tape you won't be able to tell that your new wiring wasn't a factory option. Good luck and re-post or PM with the drawing if you need more help.
