Wheel conversions for 1986-1987

    So, is this the part of the rear shock that is longer- just the clevis? I have access to aerospace quality TIG welders so if it is just a matter of lengthening the clevis, I can have that done and make it any length I need. I've not had any luck finding a nice 87 rear shock that I trust to be in good shape. YSS did respond and say that their shock is 275mm in length so that is a possibility.

    The part that the shock directly bolts to is different from 86 to 87. You have an 86 bike, so you need a longer shock, not a different linkage piece. Please re-read the previous posts carefully.

    Modifying and welding linkage pieces to continue to use a stock 86 shock is amusing. The 87 shock design is slightly improved, but they are both not great shocks to begin with.

    BUT... if you look at how the linkage operates, you need to SHORTEN the other piece to lower the swingarm. Or modify the shock clevis to be longer.

    Dude, you have an attitude. I'm not talking about modifying the linkage, I'm talking about modifying the clevis on the bottom of the shock. This bike gets ridden once a month and is 1 of many bikes in the garage. I'm not going to track it or take it to the dragon. It just gets ridden around town so I'm not particularly OCD about it. I don't want to spend 500.00 on an aftermarket shock and I can't find a nice 87 stock shock that looks anywhere near as good as the one I have.

    I mis-read yours, I apologize. The shocks are technically different, not just a longer clevis. The shock needs to be longer, that info has always been there. How you want to get there is obviously up to you.

    Like I said, it sounds like you pretty much got this now. Longer shock, a proper rear tire and maybe slide the forks up a touch. That thing will rail around town.

    RoqueRC24 has a 88/89 VFR shock for sale that looks decent. It should measure @ 275mm.

    EDIT: It likely measured @ 280mm, just like the 1987 shock. 1986 shocks are ~270mm.
