Yikes....you be a risk taker sir! Only thing I run a master link clip on is my (geared) mtn bike. The chain goes thru too much of a beating on daily use to use anything but endless "pressed" link. A friend of mine knew someone using a master link clip and the whole chain came off on the highway after cracking open his engine case.

According to this how-to article from VFRD, the swing arm pivot axle can be unbolted and an endless chain can be installed. When it comes time for me to replace my set, I'd like to also replace with Honda sprockets and a chain already put together or endless so I don't have to buy the $200 tool.

Holy crap! OK, I get from 17-25k out of a chain, not 40k. Usually use RK & AFAM as well, the packeged set usually. But I pretty much do nothing to it over the course of its life. Bad I know. I'll suddenly remember to lube it every 5,000 miles or so, maybe 7,000. I have never cleaned one. I do adjust for the stretch, couple hundred or thousand miles after install and then every 5-7,000 miles. But that is it.
I don't get 40,000 miles like I said, but I don't have time for what you listed below. 3 - 5 minutes a ride, times the # of rides I would do over 40,000 miles, that is a lot of time. I am better off riding the crap out of it, and replacing it twice as often. Stay at work and hour or two extra would likely be less time over all, and would cover the cost.

I do use a staking tool. And although I have one of the pricey ones, there are cheaper ones out there. You don't have to drop the full $200. MotionPro offers like 4 different models I think, one for every budget and level of use. I got the pro one, but if it is MotionPro, I am sure even the cheap ones work pretty well. Cheapest ones start at like $35-40. So I am sure there are companies out there selling even cheaper ones.
