    Wow...never knew

we had so many 'nerds' on here...that being said, I have 5 PC's in my home that are consistently in use...I have several more in various stages of repair and age. Can't afford a Mac, or I would have one or two of those as well.

I have 2 desktops, both older HP Workstations that I've upgraded the RAM and Video cards, but nothing compared to today's standards. The lesser of the two displays on my HDTV with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard on my coffee table. The nicer HP has a 3.2 Ghz HT Pentium 4 and sadly only 2 GB of RAM at the moment. As for the video card, I put in an Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX. It still does the job for now. I have 32 Bit Vista running on it currently, without any problems.

Then, my main laptop is a Dell Latitude D620 that has been surprisingly bulletproof...Its running the latest Beta of Windows 7 and spends most of its time in a docking station under my nightstand hooked to a projector. Windows 7 if actually quite stable, even in Beta form. I can't wait for full release!

All the rest are running Windows XP, including my wife's old Dell latitude, and my other laptop, a Dell X300. It's not altogether fast, but its very small and thin, making it quite portable. And yes, even with 3 different operating systems, they are all networked together. Thankfully I have cat5e already ran in my house as phone line, and I only have cell phones, so I changed them over to RJ45 jacks so I can have full Gigabit speed.

FYI, unless you're running a 64bit OS your computer will only utilize between 3-3.5 GB of memory, never the full 4. 32bit Vista will recognize that you have 4GB installed, but if you look at the task manager, it will show you a number between the aforementioned range.

2 piece of crap Dell's, each of which is 6+ years old. The specs of which are truely laughable so I won't bore anyone with the details.

    1 Dimension 8250
    1 Inspiron 5100

I am on an active quest to eliminate every single penny of debt I have with the exception of house payment & utilities. I am aggressively getting rid of all my payments, CC's, auto's, etc so a new computer is simply not a priority at this time.

    KC-10 FE out...

Dell mini 9 running Ubnutu. Only thing I don't like is I haven't got it to recognize my power commander when I plug it in to the USB port.

I use my work computer. 1TB hp something-or-other, (how many GBs is that? like a million?) with a water wetter intercooler and a slick 50 processor. Sooo fast, I posted this in the middle of next week... But seriously this thing has a radiator and a fan on it that I could probably take off and use for my '86...:first:
BTW: The monitor that I'm currently browsing VFRworld with is a 50" Panasonic Plasma.

If you're connecting with a non-DHCP hub/switch you'll have to specify IP settings manually.

If you're doing wireless your need an internal card that supports the same wifi security type (WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WEP, etc. etc.) with the same encryption (AES, TKIP) and same wifi type (B/G/N/etc.) in addition to the correct security key or passphrase (if applicable).

But seriously, you'd need to provide more information on your network topology before I could even guess why your vista machine isn't connecting. FTR, the problem is NOT WITH VISTA!

Yup, you have to have all your ducks in a row or they can't work. I bet it's with your securities. Most common thing I see helping my friends out with their home networks....

Don`t know! It`s a big black box that runs away all day here at work with acer on the front. Cheapest i could get!
It works (even with vista) and when it doesnt it will go in the skip and i`ll get a new one.
I have spent years playing with these things, watching the progress bars promising a better download leading to days of hassle to get rid of!
It seems ok now ,illuminating the monitor.
    MOTO:
if it works leave it alone!
