Amsoil MC 10w-40 only because it's the cheapest syn. and easiest to get where I live.

How many bikes has anyone heard of that have had problems using the manufacturers recommended oil? Just use what the book says of any brand and forget about it.

    I use regular oil. . .

Go to Costco. . aisle 10 for rotisserie chicken, aisle 3 for printer ink, aisle 7 for Chevron 10W-40 case of oil for $22. . . .

Well, I've been trying to avoid this thread, but I :yield:

    Here goes:

I've used many different oils in many different bikes.
I used to be pretty anal about it, as most motorcyclists tend to be.

I've read ALL of the "Moto vs Auto" oil tests, filter tests, everything, and being a gearhead/pseudo-scientist-engineery-type, I've understood most of it.

I started using Mobil-1 primarily, about 15 years ago, before the latest versions with the friction modifiers.

With my R1 a few years ago I used mostly the Castrol Actevo, but didn't really care for the shifting feel - felt kinda rough & notchy.
The Mobil-1 feels about the same.
I've also used the Mobil-1 4T "moto specific", with no apparent difference.

In my experience, the very best oil I've ever used is Golden Spectro.
    Shifting feel can't be beat.
I'd swear the engine feels smoother too.
Problem is they're proud of it... ($$).
Golden Spectro would be my choice if I could afford it - it feels so good!
My military BX at the time carried it at a good price.
When I got to Germany I couldn't find it, which is when I switched to Mobil-1 due to all the Autobahn speeds, etc.

I'd probably use the Rotella Synthetic if I could find it - good stuff from all indications, at a fair price if you can find it.

Nowadays I'll use whatever moto-specific oil is on sale (petroleum or synthetic), even if just for the "placebo effect" / peace-of-mind factor.
I don't like to spend more than about $3/qt.

There's really no need to waste any more $$, especially if you're draining it and throwing it away every 3-4,000 miles.
*I usually change it when the shifting quality degrades and feels rough, which typically is between 3000-4000 miles.
Castrol GTX would probably work just as well, especially with such frequent changes.

I think a high quality filter is important, so I will go with a Purolator ONE, Mobil-1, or K&N filter, whichever is available at lowest cost.
Cheap filters can self destruct at high rpm / high oil pressure, and cause other problems, and I do like to rev high and run it hard.

I can usually find Purolator ONE filters for about $5, comparable to a Fram, and less than OEM-branded filters, and available at most of my local auto parts stores.

4 quarts and a filter usually cost me well under $20- at Pep Boys, with spare change for a Taco Bell stop next door to snack on while waiting for the oil to drain!

Gee; I guess I am the only one that runs Redline 10-40 oil and I use a K&N
oil filter, I have herd the K&N has a smaller amount of filtering media,I never took one apart, but I suppose I could. eddie

I love it! I started taking that approach myself only I go to WalMart instead.

Mobil Clean 5000 - It's like $2.50 a quart. I started doing the math on what I spend on oil changes and realized I'm being rediculous. The fact that I put a lot of miles on my bikes and am also a tightwad about maintenance was starting to cost me some serious $$$. I can change regular dino oil at 3,000 mile intervals for much less than synthetic at 5,000 mile intervals.

FYI in case anyone needs clarification:

Mobile Clean 5000 in the 10W40 weight only does not have Energy Conserving additives. All the other Mobile Clean weights do (5W20, 5W30, 10W30). Here's the chart for reference: http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_Clean_5000.asp#SpecsApprovalsTitle

Don't see any problems at all. Cannot go wrong with a quality synthetic. Most important regardless of the oil brand/type is regular change intervals. Asking guys on here what kinda oil to use or is best, is like asking what girl is the prettiest, or what food is the best. Everybody will tell you something different.

AmsOil 10W40 motorcycle specific. I like K&N oil filters because of the 17mm nut made to the end of the filter. The nut also has a hole drilled through it so you can safety wire it for the track.

    OK, I'll add my two cents, just because. I like Golden Spectro, for two reasons;

    1. It has made every bike I've used it in shift smoother and easier
    2. Every bike I've used it in, I've adjusted the valves on, and the valvetrain always looks to be in excellent condition (including my old air-cooled CB1100F, which has a tick over 50K miles on it).

In all fairness, I have not had to disassemble the engine or tranny on any of them, so I have no idea what the bearings, pistons/rings, gears or clutches look like.

Seems my two cents turned into a nickel. Sorry 'bout that!

Never ceases to amaze me why oil is discussed so much and so often on bike forums. As long as 10/30 motorcycle specific oil is used and changed once a year/7,000 miles, I would bet both my testicles that it makes zero difference what kind. I have total confidence there has never in the history of motorcycling been an engine failure, or has an engine shown shorter or longer life, because the owner chose a certain type of oil.

Agreed. I doubt in the history of mankind has there ever been a motorcycle forum thread title of "5000 miles on 10W30 fossil oil killed my motor".

My oil of choice: Shell Rotella T cuz it comes in a big jug.
