Just got back from the Grand Prix in Taft. Rode through 5 counties and 50 degrees of climate change. 80 degrees Just NW of Orange County at the 5 and the 605. Down to 71 at the 5 and the 101. Back up to 84 Just west of the 405 on the 101 Woodland Hills / Callabassas, turned North on the 33 and it was down to 34 degrees at the summit (>5000 feet) at 2:30 in the afternoon. Got to Maricopa / Taft and it was a perfect 74 until 4:00pm then its starts getting cold in a hurry, 31 was the low for the night. But by then I wasn't on the VFR anymore, we were racing 50's with the brakes disabled... (but that's another story in itself)

I went to get my bike serviced this morning and it was 29 outside but it felt colder then when I rode in the 20... I guess the wind chill really does make a big difference...

Artificial wind chill ie: freeways speeds, makes your brain freeze. Seems the only part of me I can't keep warm in my forehead. A proper fitting helmet is just too tight for any insulating head gear to work. But I still ride, just slow down a bit. Last night, (or early this morning actually) I was following a truck laying down the salt brine. Tonight it is supposed to be a bit colder.

If the temp is going to be in the 30s then I will take my bike out while it's still in the mid 20s. Rode to Mammoth Cave Ky last summer, the heat index was 110. Back in the early 1980s I rode down to Key West. Don't know how hot it was but it felt like standing in front of a hair dryer on high heat. Had a air-cooled 1977 CB750. Didn't have traffic on US1 back then so wasn't a problem. These days it's so much stop and go you have to have a water-cooled or syn-oil if your air-cooled.

I have a feeling that I'm gonna be riding in 100 plus temps this summer in GA, anyone know of any gear that keeps you coolest that doesn't destroy your pocket?

I run a Scorpion EXO 700, Icon Pursuit gloves, and a Scorpion Cool Rod mesh jacket for warm weather duties. Yes, the Icon's are all leather and you may think that they won't be as cool as textile gloves, I thought that too, I was wrong. Not only do they flow just as well if not better than the other textile gloves I had (scorpion cool hand and joe rocket something) they last waaaaaaay longer.

Splash a little water on your noggin before you put your helmet back on, helps cool ya a bit till it gets warmed up by your head. There are also vests made that you soak in water and wear under your jacket that are supposed to help keep you cool in hot weather, I can't speak for these as I have not used them, but I don't remember them being very expensive.

Oh, and HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE. Water is your friend. If you have any storage space at all invest in a good little thermos type thing that dosen't leak and can keep water icy cold. Helps out a bunch when you pull over for a break, don't have to go buy fresh cold water everytime.
