Out the door at 8am to take the VFR down to Honda for a mega service including a full vtec valve check. I know valves on these bikes rarely need new shims fitting, but since I woke the bike from its winter slumber last week the top of the engine has been a lot noisier than previously, and at 100k its probably time to give the bike a thorough check over.

The trip down to Honda was not fun, but thankfully the BT30s handled it all without any nervous moments. It started out bad enough riding in steady drizzle, then it turned to sleet, and then heavy rain, only reaching mostly dry roads right down by Lake Geneva. Won't know until tommorrow evening if the bikes is ready to collect or they have had to order in shims. Crossed fingers time.

Glad cha made it safely. .....didn't sound like an enjoyable ride.
Question, is this the first for the valves?

Third - Checks by Honda had just been done by the previous owner just when I bought it - even got a mechanics report to show all in spec and again by me (again all in spec) despite replacing two of the official major checks with standard oil change and other recommended checks just leaving out the valve checks.

Will be interesting to see what they find.

Well the bike is back after its major service and sounding sweeeet!

I guess its no surprise to folks on here that there were no nasty shocks on the vtec valve check despite the speedo now at 90746. The Techie confirmed all the valves were still pretty much spot on - and none had reached the stage where it would be appropriate to install the next size up shim. I also asked them to replace the steering bearings which had pretty much seized up during winter storage - what a difference! Very surprised their report mentioned it would be need a new rear tyre soon but sure enough when I checked the middle was already not far off the wear limit markers. Despite being marketed as an improved touring tyre it seems the Bridgestone T30 EVOs are not going to last anywhere near as far as the more sport oriented BT23's I had before. Looks like I will revert to BT23s if they are still available.

One of those sometime projects that I did today.

Wheel was going back on, tried to polish out the rust on the right side spacer. Nope.

    Time for more stainless!

Not so much what I did today, but what I'm doing over the next week. Finally got the front wheel all purdy. Now for the rear shock while waiting for Jamie s goodies.

Nice day here, took the old old girl for a 40 mile ride, nearly home I heard a funny chuff chuff chuff noise. Stopped and put it center stand and spun rear wheel. I found all the sprocket nuts where loose and one was rubbing the axle locating bracket! Tightened them thumb tight and limped home. Took the wheel apart and found that it was 4 out of the 5 studs that had come loose and backed out! When I put it back together last summer, I guess I didn't properly torque the nuts and the wobbling loosened the studs too. Took out all 5 studs and wire brushed. I use double nuts on one stud at a time to tighten and put them back into the hub with loctite.

Probably should have used a torque hammer!

Glad nothing serious came of this.

I was lucky that I started to hear noise near end of ride, I was zipping along my favorite road about 70-75 just before that. At speed I though it was wind noise in my helmet, it wasn't till I slowed down for a stop sign that I heard the definite chuff chuff chuff, all the nuts/studs were loose, but only one was rubbing.

LOL Yes and no... so its off to work I go.... Shock was almost out, just need to cus at it a bit more, or take another drink, love these projects. If it wasn't for the exhaust and a certain wire harness, it would have fallen out.
