Today, i ordered one of the chrome plated oil lines, from the oil cooler to the engine. Theyre $100 each!

I bought the 01, last April. Evidently, the bike had sat for a number of years in an unheated pole barn. I theorize that it got put away dirty, at some point. Ive replaced the rusty stock header, and the rusty chain got replaced with a gold DID. Ill order the other chrome plated oil line in a week or 2. When i change the oil next, ill change those out.

The foot peg return springs got rusty, also. I HATE rust! Those springs will get replaced soon, also. Then it will be totally rust free.

Im almost finished working on this thing.

GF has ordered the 8th gen quickshifter for my xmas. She is having it posted to me so will get it before then as "I'm not sure how big or heavy this is."
To be fair, it probably weighs more than she does.

If I go one color, they will be allpowderpaints hyper silver. Two tone combo is still up in the air.
I know a lot of people like them, but I'm not sorry to see the black wheels go.

I had for a bit when I had one done and the other not yet.

Not very extreme mind you, yet it gave me time to ponder the idea though.

Fitted the quickshifter my gf bought me for Christmas to my 8th gen. Instruction PDF online was really good but hit 2 major snags. First one was getting the R&G crash bobbin off the LHS. Second was the 3 clips on the underside of the fairing, no matter what i did they would not budge. Eventually broke two as simply no other way of removing them.
Had no 8mm hex to tighten up the shifter assembly so thats on order along with some new clips.
Will re-fit fairings when they arrive.

I love quickshifts. Especially the auto-blip downshifts. I'd love both on my 5th gen.

Lol, should have one but can't find it. Got one coming. I can put the fairings back on without it.
Waiting till Saturday so my gf can lend a hand as it's going to be a fidgety job on my own.

I think the wax unit fluid pipes may be blocked on my 5th gen. When I start it the fast idle raises to 2000 rpm then after a little while raises to 3200 rpm, takes quite a while for the idle to come back to 1200 rpm. When I've been for a short ride the idle comes back up, to 2500 rpm. Damn...

The coolant outlets for the wax unit are on the top of the thermostat housing, they are very small internally and tend to block if there was ever any air in the system as it's the first place were corrosion forms or scumms builds up.
It's a pain in the arse job, but not as bad as people make out.
Make sure you have time, space and patience before you get into it, and a long screwdrivers.
May as well replace the thermostat, hoses and O rings there while at it.

Thanks for the info. I haven't needed to remove the base of the air filter box before, to notice the access to the area. I browsed a few photos on the net, if they're correct the 5th gen seems to be easier to get to the wax unit than other VFR models, would that be correct?

It's cooler weather today, to be in the shed, I might get into it this afternoon.

The hardest part is reconnecting all the hoses and electrical connections on the bottom of the air box.
Some people have had trouble removing the throttle bodies from the intake hoses, but on mine they came out easy.
You will deffinetly need a new thermostat housing O ring before you reassemble, as they square up and are not reusable.
I also sugest you get a long phillips bit and an extension to use with a cordless to reach the throttle body hose clamps.
Apply a little bit of grease to the hoses before reassembly to make it easier next time.
Take pictures as you remove stuff to check later.
    Good luck.
If you need help and info, PM me and I'll send you my phone number.
