    Chris~

Motorcycle boots are designed to protect your foot by providing impact protection and limiting movement of the ankle joint.
Impact protection is provided by hard and/or soft internal and/or external armor. You will find the armor at the toe area, the ankle area and on the shin.
MC boots are designed to limit side to side hyperextention and twisting of the ankle.
I was wearing Bates Enforcer boots (leather/nylon construction) when I broke my ankle last year. They failed to provide the stiffness required to keep my ankle from hyperextending to the outside. Had I been wearing some proper MC boots, I am confident that it would have just been a sprain and not a break. IT would have been a $250 trip to urgent care, instead of the $2500 it cost for the orthopedic work, cast, etc.
Bottom line...every bit of protection helps.
If you are wearing your boots jumping out of planes, I assume they have pretty good ankle support, but I can tell ya that my combat/tactical boots didn't protect me in my fall.

    Mike,
Thanks man. Never got an explanation before, but then again, never really asked. Now if I could only find an AFFORDABLE pair that offers up the desired protection without looking too silly. Something in black with ominous looks.

Oh yeah, like LEGS said, a pair that could be also used to kick someone in the sack if needed.....hey, now THAT is multitasking!!!

SFPA-- Great to hear from you on the front lines. I can see what you mean about high cost of boots(sell me!), but IMO Chris is spot on with the reason you wear specialized footwear in the first place. Nothing but real motorcycle boots will decrease your ankle flexion enough to reduce/eliminate injury in a get off. That is why how they walk around is nearly irrelevant to me personally.

check out the earlier part of the thread RW put a pic of the Sidi Stradas, they are pretty tame looking and not too expensive. ( I have them so I'm biased but.. )

thanks for keeping our asses over here safe.

After just riding back some 450 miles in light and very heavy rain can re confirm the Alpinestars Gortex held up in total comfort and are still 100% water proof.

A few days after I made that post I discovered that my left boot had a 4-5cm hole in the sole. Oh well, time for a new pair.

I bought the same brand & style as my previous pair.
