Im coming into this late, but what two4one stated early on is perfect advise.
Im a recent addict to track days, and after two track days i decided to buy a dedicated track bike. (In fact i bought rmcobb's bike he spoke about a few posts up)
My stock (except for some sticky Pilot Race's) '03 VFR did awesome at the track. I think your doing the right thing by giving it a try with your current bike, and if you catch the bug, a $3000 bike will be perfect. By the way, and not to start a weight war, but my newly aquired '01 F4i weighs in wet at 308 lbs.

...oh yeah, and there truely is nothing better than whoopin' it up on all the other superior bikes at the track that aren't being ridden to their potential. I was surprising (read passing) alot of them my first time out ! :first:

Mello, I appreciate the write-up, but I did a Weenie and pulled out of the Penske. Soon after ordering it I came across a thread in VFRD where people were talking about installing a CBR 929 in their VFRs. Triple adjustable with a remote reservoir and the same spring rate as our shocks - well I couldnt resist trying, $770 is a lot of dough. I cancelled the Penske and bought this shock off ebay - if it's worn out its only a $350 rebuild, but theres a good chance it'll work fine at least for awhile.

After making a spacer and installing it I'll post up results, but the VFRD guys say it's an awesome cheap upgrade. Looking forward to the track next spring

I found the name of the guy with the dedicated 5th gen track bike - name is
    JAZZ.

Check out his ride. Looks great to me, I'm putting it on my wish list.

Well, I decided to order the Penske after all, I decided the 929 shock is better than the stocker but is undersprung for the VFR. The good news is Penske has come out with a new one w/ 16 positions of compression damping instead of 6. I gotta say that for $770 for a freakin shock it better be the bee's knees.

The stocker is a pogo stick compared to the Penske.

16 positions? Whoa... I wonder if mine can be converted.
