hobo, sorry to hear that this has happened to you....

you have a reciept from the bozo that sold you the bike? I am willing to bet that he had the bike and tried the same thing you did registering it. then unloaded it on another (you) what a DICK...I wonder if the original owner was notified that his bike was found...21 years later....maybe the insurance company will let you keep the bike...... you arent gonna get in trouble .. you bought it on good faith and tried to do the right thing...

    hope it all works out...

I think we have all learned a valuable lesson from this..

    1) check vin numbers..if the plate aint there...don't buy it no matter how good of a deal it is..

Might try putting a mechanics lean on it for your time, maybe the insurance company will not want to bother with it. And you want any parts back you had installed. I would talk to the insurance company after rearching all angles.

Wow. Considering I have to drag my '85 project bike to the CHP for a VIN inspection to get a new title soon, I'm a little worried now! DMV has signed off already so I assumed that meant it was clear (not stolen), but I guess we'll see. Do they have wi-fi in jail??!

Maybe get them to run the vin again and see what info is availible or old tag number.

I know here in AZ you have to be carefull the title can be clear but when you go to get it in your name it can turn into a salvage title if the insurance paid a claim on it. Allso a title loan company can have a outstanding loan on it from the previous ownen even thou you hold the title. I usually go to the DMV with the seller and when all is well then they get the cash.

Yeah, good advice for next time. The last tags on the CA plate were from '88 and the DMV had no record of the bike, it was a CA emissions model so I assume it was originally sold in CA. DMV did the VIN inspection and gave me new plates, registration and tags. The central office caught the error, the CHP needs to do the VIN inspection, so no title. The stolen vehicle websites returned no hits on the VIN so I think it should be fine but I don't know if the CHP has other databases they check outside of DMV's checks. If I'm offline for 3-5 years you'll know why.

Now I'm a little concerned. Bought a VF500F last week that didn't have the frame ID tags on it. Couldn't see a VIN on the frame anywhere......

well, to make a long story short. i got the bike back this past wednesday. the chp and san mateo stolen vehicle task force found original vin number after confirming bike was stolen. insurance company that owns bike has gone out of business. with the correct vin, now i have to go to dmw and try to register the bike again. most likely will result in lien sale and paying fees to file. chp officer said "now the hard part is about to begin."

    Yeeeeeeesh!

I get funny looks for this but I always get a valid ID and write it down on the bill of sale just to insure the person I am dealing with is who they say they are . Been bit once myself.

now to deal with ca dmv. i have an appointment scheduled for this next monday. i have copy of san mateo county stolen vehicle task force info, release from chp and copy of title issued by dmv with bogus vin that shows bike legally registered to me. i also have copy of non op registration showing previous owner also having bike registered with bad vin number. chp has sent original pink to dmv to have internal policing dept research who was tech that initially issued title with 16 digits and on stolen bike. i did not know they could go back years later and chase down past/current employees that might have involved in fraudulant activities. the story continues..........

drivehobo, good luck. It's a nightmare of red tape..

I still haven't been to the CHP, carbs are gummed up from sitting, need to clean that up and get it down there for inspection.

Crusty, who did the inspection, dmv or chp?
