I'm sorry if this is the wrong section, but here's my VFR build video of my 1991. I really like this bike and I want to give a thanks to everyone on the forum who's answered my various questions and has helped me! Thanks! :)

Btw, the song in the background is parody song about gingers, I have red bikes, gingers have red hair... i thought I was being clever... lol

Well the thing I question about what you did was installing and tightening the K&N oil filter. You might have missed the thread (several actually) about the failure of the K&N oil filters, particularly when using the nut on the end of the filter when tightening the filter. Other than that, nice job, especially with the chain. I would never had guessed it was a gold chain!

Note, not that every K&N oil filter will fail, I would just keep an eye on it for leaks.

Oh Shit.... OML and anything else that fits the bill.. Nice Video, love how you go to the trouble But??? Dude change the oil filter, ASAP. I mean now. You where doing great up to when you used a wrench to tighten the filter doh! Hand tight is al one needs to do. I'll go one further than OOTV by saying it will fail sooner and when you least expect it. other than that, nice..

I wish there was a video like this for every bike! Sometimes I think about whether I would like owning a certain bike or not and think "hmm how hard would it be to service this bike?" This video answers that question pretty well. Great video!

Sweet video! Great job on it and the moto!

I agree with OOTV on the filter tho...I have first hand experience with a failure.

    ...I go to church, I'm a Christian, I have a soul...funny song!!

Thanks everyone! Is the K&N filter really that bad? Is it bad to tighten it or something? Can I just loosen it?

Since you guys feel so strongly then I will change it. I'm just surprised. I run K&N on my other bikes for years without issue, is this only affecting the VFR?

Also what filter should i replace it with?

The thing is after so many failures here, we as a group are really anti K-N oil filter folks. The thing is that nut is tac welded on, is not there for tightening. Once you use a wrench on the nut like what you did on the video the nut tac welds are stressed to the point of breaking, hence, it will leak like a SOB. Will this happen to you? more than likely once heat and pressure is added. Also , there's no reason to tighten more than hand tight, 1/4 turn after snug is all there is to it. We're Just watching out for ya ;)

Like everyone else has said. Just too many failures.

I'm using Wix, but Napa and others all have decent filters as well as the OEM.

Yes, Ducky, I look back on it and still can't believe I wasn't seriously hurt.

I haven't thought of posting photos and/or reviews on ads. Good idea.

Hope he gets his filter changed, especially after seeing him use a tool on it.

Thank god you were able to stop safely and not be injured, nevermind avoiding engine damage.

The question here might be, was the filter installed right in the first place?

"Yes it was", doesn't cut it as an answer.

Badbilly, that is not even the issue here. The debate is not whether mine was installed right or his was installed right. The issue is his was installed exactly like mine was and mine failed. That's it.

It would be prudent on his part to take it off and replace it with the same filter if he chooses without using a tool on the end or with a whole new brand of filter.

If no other filters by other manufacturers, distributors and suppliers have not failed due to who knows what, then your premise is valid.

I suggest a search using any method you wish to gain the broader view on the many filter failures again, due to who knows what. Back just a few one of the Muzzy racebikes spit a lower end and pumped oil on the racetrack. The analysis by those who know a lot more about bikes than me or thee, attributed the failure to the filter.

Failure can occur for many reasons. Addressing that a given filter could have been improperly installed is an issue for any bike using a filter. A more convincing argument could be put forward if the lug on photo of the failed filter was not chipped up maybe from being over tourqued, partially shearing the weld.

To infer that "his" is or was installed "exactly" like "yours" is skimming the cream off a well milked issue.

Page after page on Google about filter failures: "motorcycle oil filter failures", evidencing that indeed, filters do fail with sometimes catastrophic results.

One cannot help noticing that most of the entries on the first Google page address the K&N filters. Had one done some research prior to a long ride or a suggestion that a K&N filter be installed or have installed, the problem would likely not exist indicating that teachers need to do their homework too.

Moi, I gots me one a them Scotts jobbies what gots one a them renches that comes with. Been on me 91 for aboot 50 k miles give or take.

So why are you continuing to milk the issue other than you just wanting to be a dick?

Sadly, this is what Billy does, and seems to enjoy it. :(

It's a shame because behind all the sarcasm and trolling, I believe he has a wealth of knowledge to share - instead he focuses his energy on antagonizing the denizens of these forums.

It's OK to disagree, but how he goes about it isn't.
