Most of us know all this shit anyway because it was in a magazine on the news stand at WalMart.

Good post. Keep in mind that top speed isn't all about HP. Aerodynamics plays a huge role and the faster you go the more it comes into play. There was a recent post about this very thing on Fireblades.org. A guy had a 900RR and it did 175 "on the dyno".

Better aerodynamics is why the current crop of 600's do very well against older bikes like my 954, which is not great (aerodynamically speaking). I haven't topped out the 954. I would guess it's somewhere around 160ish. The fastest I have been on the 954 is 150 and that was riding 2up. The bike is -1 on the front and has a speed-o-healer.

Does all this mean that even though the speedo on my bike says 175 , I can't really go that fast or BS the mullets in the WalMart parking lot that it's really that fast? .

Please notice that the above comment was done in two sentences and was not in any way a copyright infirngement, plagiarized from some unknown source or a diss on WalMart.

Um, yeah, that's why the post says:
"Now, I also know that top speed is more a component of HP, aerodynamics (per klee27x), gearing, and weather conditions; I also know that given enough "runway", weight doesn't play that much of a role in top speed. However, the math is still the math."

Terminal velocity on my 2007 vfr800s7 with the factory side cases on was 139 indicated (error of 10 mph going alongside Dad's GPS at 70mph). Close to sea level going south around the rockies leaving L.A. I didn't Rollie Free or anything but I was pretty hunched. Never got that middle digit to 4.
Haven't found anything long enough around here to try with the bags off.

I got my first Viffer, an 84 700 with unknown engine mods, up to 140. The upper fairing stay was cracked though, and at 140 the whole front fairing, speedo, etc, started vibrating and moving about 2 inches up and down.

My second 700 was an 85 and had spent a good 2 years on the bench while the plastic was slowly repainted, it didn't run optimal and I only got it to about 90 before I had sold it off because it was "pretty."

Both bikes I had in my twenties, no kids, no wife, etc. My newest project is an 84 VF1000F and will never get above the speed limit or my wife and kids will kill me.

I just bought my bike a few days ago, the carbs need synching and maybe some new fork seals, but I got her up to 130 on the way home from buying it. :)

    Guys

Ran out of clean underware at 260Kph (162.5) after changing from fifth at 250(156.25). She had plenty left but I can no longer see that fast. Make a point of taking her over 200 at least once a week and she remains comfortable to about 235. After that side winds and turbulance behind the touring screen make things rather unpleasant. Fastest I've done with panniers is about 220 but fully loaded the nose becomes verry light and keeping a straight line is hard work.

Must add that the vince pipes, aftermarket air filter and suspected altered FI mapping might give a bit of extra oomph. (These items were fitted by the previous owner, personally the standard bike would be more than enough for me.)

All in all I would think if one deducts about 10% for optimism that the 265kph (165) as published by the manufacturer is just about spot on.

    Cheers.

    maybe, maybe not

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but I found my '04 VFR speedo indicated about 9% high (80 indicated was actually 72 on my GPS). A Speedohealier fixed it, but don't rely on your stock speedo for an accurate MPH.

This is common knowledge. one cannot say the speedometer on any modern vehicle is actually close to accurate on account of the reading being optimistic. this is true of cars and bikes. however I've also GPS verified my old RD speedometer to be pretty much spot on, within maybe .1mph, give or take.

I do know though, these bikes are absolutely fast enough, and I have zero need, or reason to hit triple digit speeds. 100 is plenty fast for me. PLENTY.

    vfr speed freak

I recently bought a 2nd gen (1986) vfr 750 and first order of business was to see how fast she went hit 260kmh no probs. Had a hard time hanging on through 2nd, 3rd and 4 by the time i shifted to 5th and stretched out and put it in 6 I was almost at the end of the road. What a rush! i'm sorry i had to wait until i was 50 to do it , but hey, u only live once. cheers

on I-57 between matoon and Mt.Vernon Illinois yesterday the road was clear of taffic for about 3 miles and I opened her up and eat up some road.
my speedo was showing about 154mph when I decided I needed to back down closer to the speed limit as I didn't need to go to jail or get my bike impounded..LOL

read a bunch of the jokes on the "laugh thread" and a crap load of comments throughout these posts tonight. That was hands down the brightest, smartest and funniest statement made. "White, the fast one" good stuff friend.

I've had mine to a genuine 140mph, it was still accelerating but there was too much side wind & I was running out of road, so had to back off.

Last sunday on a german "autobahn": 255 kmh (on odo). That's 158 mph I believe (?).
A Porsche overtook me..... For the record: it's all legal on some Germany autobahns....

Notice: that was still in 5th. gear !........another one to go.....but traffic went to bussy.
I love life too much....so I slowed down. And than there was the border ....no more fast riding in Holland. Don't want to lose my license, life or/and bike.:fear:

Guess I have to try it again. But I don't do this on a regular basis.......
    According to Honda top-speed is 260 kmh/ 162 mph. I think that's realistic.

Just finished 2100 miles in 7 days of riding around Washington, Oregon, and NoCal. My Speedohealer indicated I got the VFR up to 91 mph. I don't remember that. Most of the fun riding was between 45 and 75 mph . . .
