If you're able to replace the hose with an equivalent diameter new one, it makes assembly so much easier. They really do turn to steel after nearly 40 years.

Ok, back at it again. New floats all around, adjusted those, cleaned what I could, again. It starts like a champ, I can run around the neighborhood but mid to high throttle is still not happening. I thought maybe the formerly infested mufflers were to blame, so I slipped them off and did a really quick and neighbor-annoying ride, but no change. I checked the float levels with a see-through tube and although all the same, the level seemed high at about 4mm above the carb/bowl separation. Guess it's back to total clean of the passageways....

with a clear tube, fuel level should be exactly where the part line is between carb and float bowl [plus or minus one mm] measured as shown. high level could be leaky float needles or incorrect float adjustment or wrong parts.

I think I'm almost there. I checked the front plugs and they looked lean, from color. I rechecked the air screws and backed them to 2.5, then 3 turns. I took it for a spin. Without choke I had similar results. With full choke it let me accelerate all the way...first time on this pig. So, tomorrow or after my trip next week I'll strip them off, adjust the floats, reclean the passages and try again.

Forgot to ask: the rebuild kit came with shims for the float valve seat. When I took it apart the first time, there were none under the seat. Should I install them? What purpose do they serve?

alloy crush washers seal against leaks, determine height of needle seat. seats without the spacers means some ignorant boob worked on them. if the new seats are any different from the older ones, you will need to readjust floats.

Well, finally got the 700 running. Turns out to be a nice handling pig of a bike, pretty fun.
It seems there were a couple things going on. The float height I adjusted twice. It likes to be at about 9.5mm, not the prescribed 7mm. I changed the main jets, too. I could not read what was on the old ones, but I threw in 132's in all four. I may switch two out for 128's next round.
My #2 carb is leaking, despite a new bowl gasket. I will see if that needle is stuck, or if the bowl is warped, bad gasket, hairline crack..dunno. No riding any further than around the block until that is solved, sigh....
