YSS. Have them in 3 bikes now and I like them a lot. Very good value.

My first one was on a bike (VF1000F) that I didn't want to have a remotes res hanging out somewhere. Wanted the upgrade to be a little more stealth.
Liked it so much I put one on this 1000R and one on the Hawk GT.

    Won't be my last.

Preload, separate ride height adjustment and rebound damping adjustment. Not saying it's the best shock in the world, but for money, it checks A LOT of boxes. And when you're modding a bunch of bikes like I am, this is a very good "compromise".

Thanks Cap… I’m gonna look into one
    I have a “ Jaime” CBR600 unit on my 1000f that works great …
Gonna look into that YSS. I did have a pair on my CB1000 Big One and it was a nice upgrade….
    Again thanks !

The 1000F had a DMr modded CBR unit and it worked really good. But I needed (wanted) more ride height after the switch to wide 17"s front and rear. The DMr unit will go on the stock 86 and the original shock and rebound adj cable will go in a box for the future owner. I have an extra hose and cable that will go to nowhere to retain the stock look.

    Nice!!!!

I had to replace my stock 84 1000f shock because I came out of a Carls Junior one day after lunch and the shock had collapsed! Looked funny.
Man the ride home was intense!

Come to think about it …

I recommend going thru the application guide and make sure the specs (specifically the length range) matches your needs. I've seen a couple instances where the guide said one shock, but the actual shock (length) I wanted was another model. Like VF1000F2 and VF1000R or something like that.

The "length" of the shock is in the part number.

So I guess I'm saying make sure a VFR shock is gonna give you at least 1987 length. They might think that one VFR shock should fit them all. I'll get out the Application Guide they ship with shocks and take a look.

Speaking of shocks, rebuild the stock 88/89 on mine or go for something fancier more dedicated to my riding style. I don't like boats.

For the money you would be putting into a "rebuild"...

I think you know the answer.

OK... just measured a 86 and 87 stock shock.

    Eye to Eye mm
    86 - 270
    87 - 280

And as I suspected the application guide lists 86 and 87 together on a 275 shock. Which is fine because the shock has at least +/-5mm length adjustment, good for either.

    BUT

Going down one line in the booklet to the 88-89 VFR, it lists a 285mm length shock. That's the one I would use for sure. Go down to stock 87 length for a wheel swap, or get that ass in the air even more.

MZ456-285 TR-07 is what the Guide lists.

One other thing too.... if you ever wanted to revert to the 18" wheel or play around with different heights, you can install the 87 suspension knuckle and it compensates for the extra length. So if you felt you just didn't like the longer shock at the shortest setting, that piece takes you back and then you can start playing with longer shock lengths for your sweet spot. Gives many variables for you or any future owner to play with.

Understood… I’m leaning toward the YSS. Might as well put one on when I have it on the lift with everything off.

    Thank You Cap
