Ok...finally got a breath while waiting on some parts for customer and jumped back into it! After some research and seeing everyone's awesome creations, I have decided to make this thing a full blown FWS1000 replica...ish with a few modern mods. I just fell in love with them through the research...what an awesome part of Honda history...I mean, it was partly responsible for the creation of HRC...I plan on trying to follow the earlier RSC bike..I like the boxy tail better. I wish I had better pictures of the bike without body work, looks to be only a few available. If anyone knows of better ones, please let me know! I can see where they located most things, but rear bank exhaust routing is a bit of a mystery as far as were it goes right out of the head. I can not find the correct tail section, but I think I can graft the Ducati F1 into something very close. I really wanted to use the factory front fork set, but as everyone has already done the inverted and CBR wheels already, I did something a little different. I wanted a standard fork like the FWS and larger brakes while still being able to get good 17 inch rubber for front and rear...I had a (gasp) 99 Triumph Daytona parts mule that front fit the bill! After some light fabrication and bearing debacles, it mounted right up...now to sand those ol Triumph emblems off the calipers! I also began on the engine and case split, and I am so glad I did. After removing the oil pump, I went ahead and popped it open and you can see what a mess it was.....the engine had a little over 20k on it...but wow. New one on the way. I will be splitting the case on down soon, but I think some parts are inbound tomorrow so it may be a few more days...but it is moving on along...I am excited every time I touch it!.....the bike weirdos

How long are the Triumph forks compared to stock? Much shorter and you're in for interference with the lower radiator. What's the offset of the Triumph triples. RC51/CBR offset is 30mm and that really blows on these frames. Stock R is 50mm. I eventually had to go with a custom set at 45mm just to get a reasonable steering lock back. A CB1000("The Big One") uses a quick release setup on the forks like the R's only they're bigger.

Looks like your making headway. Too bad you can't use the R's Comstars, they scream HRC and are part of the reason I fell in love with the R .

What you want with them chewed gears, making a charm bracelet? lol...yours if you want them..I assume you are going to deck them and used them, pm me and they are yours!

The offset is around 46...not too bad. It does not interfere a bit with the frame (after removing the oe lock trap) or tank, they are only marginally shorter, and I plan a few tricks for the radiator, so I think it is going to work out nice. The oe switch even bolts right in the hole in the Triumph triple tree! I hear you on the Comstar...those things are so rad....it might look funny but I am using the rear one! I wanted to graft some spokes on the Triumph wheel, but I doubt those big Nissin calipers will let me...I have a customer with a cb1000 like that...what an awesome bike.

Looking good but hope I never have to see those internal engine parts on my 1KR!

Very cool though that someone with the resources is rebuilding this bike, I'm very interested to see the final build! :thumb:

Thanks...yeah I did not really want to see that either! lol, but I couldnt justify building a race replica without being able to hammer on it knowing its ok down there...
I like the NSR rear, but it is a bit pinched and more modern looking than I am going for..plus I am not sure if they sell the rear, just the front and lower sections. Here is the tail I think I am going with, with adding just a little on the bottom and cutting a hole in the right side for the left exhaust...

Finally got to split the case! For a 47k mile unit, it actually looks quite good. Will not know until measurements are taken, but there is no deep or abnormal wear indicated. Even the dogs in the transmission look pretty good. Pistons have minimal skirt wear, cylinders appear normal, just glazed from years of rpm. I am really quite happy with how it looks. Measurements start next week but may be slowed due to a paper mache R1 crossplane with a hole in the block......sure dont build them like they used to. 003.jpg 004.jpg 009.jpg 010.jpg 011.jpg 012.jpg 013.jpg 014.jpg 015.jpg 017.jpg

Sorry it has been awhile everyone, plans are still moving along, but more customer work has slowed progress. After measuring some R1 pistons while rebuilding one...I have some crazy ideas brewing. I did post some better pics on our facebook page here: VF1000r | Facebook

Check it out and the other projects and repairs we have going on. Like us! I will send updates soon!

It's good to see your saving/keeping the R. I have one big question though. In your reply #13 the 2nd photo of the front valve cover/head, what is that tower like thing over #4 spark plug? Looks like there is no #4 spark plug. I've never seen a V4 with that. Or is it an optical illusion?

Yeah, I think you are seeing the camshaft cap. The rear cover in that picture (if I am looking at the correct one) is removed.

I like the concept and the progress on this build. Always igreat to see a worthy project undertaken by someone with enough experience, imagination, tools, shop facilities and finances to do a proppa job of it.

Interesting to get any observations of initial wear on any components or any possible mods for improvement. You'd want to try getting ideas how the factory built it's race motors and blueprints. What bearing and piston clearances, etc. Lots of pit photos show racing exhausts for those bikes fabed from 50 or more short bits of welded small sections variable diameter Ti pipe and beautiful flowing lines, each one taking days to hand build.

Nice build...deconstruction...whatever. I thinks this motor will never run again, R1 pistons, I don't know. I will bring you what ever beverage you want if you get this piece back on the road. Just sayin
    VT bites too.
