Added a little more cool to my bike after reading this topic. It can get in to heat soak in hot stop/go low speed traffic with the fairing on it now. Haven't been able to go out and try it yet. May be today depending on weather.

The fan has been water proofed and spins at 4000rpm so it should move some air. It's low enough to also blow on part of the oil filter and oil pan. I have it set up to work off my manual fan switch with the top two fans. I put rubber bumpers in each corner to raise it 1/8th inch a way from the radiator fins. This fan was made for this radiator, lucky fit.

Well I finally was able to put the extra fan to the test this past Friday. Temps were high 70's with 80%+ humidity. I was passing thru a small town at about 25/30mph. I let the temp gauge get up close to the red before I turned on my fans. I looked at the odometer to see how long it would take to start to cool. With in a half mile the temp gauge was at the half way mark and another half mile it was at the quarter mark! Man was I surprise at how fast it cooled down.

I finally got out of town and forgot to turn fans off. Running about 45mph the gauge got a little below a quarter and stayed there. So it cools fast but doesn't over cool. Should of thought of this years ago. Water proofing a PC fan to use. Once on the bike it just fits room wise and blows air on the oil pan and filter. Just guessing it's cooling the oil some also. We'll see how long it lasts down there in all that heat. That could be the Achilles heel.

It's confirmed: the remains of my bike will be auctioned off, and the insurance company will settle my claim financially. I have to admit to feeling sad to see her go. :-(

After a lot of thinking, looking at specs of different bikes (even different makes), reading reviews, and swinging my leg over a few "short-list" bikes, I've made the decision to get another 5th gen. Well, actually, I'm considering the idea of buying my old bike back at the auctions, and raising her from the grave (complete with reflective, fire-like phoenix livery), but that's probably just a pipe-dream...

Anyway, the moral of the story is that the dual stage fan modification is far from dead! Just a bit delayed in the implementation phase... ;-)

What does it take to water proof a PC fan?

I've committed to buy a '99 with 19,000km, so it won't be long before I start getting this modification back into action.

Here she is! My new steed has arrived at her new home. As stock as a rock, but that won't last long! ;-)

This thread has convinced me that a right side fan is the way to go. I have a manual switch on the vtr mod already. I think the water proof pc fan is the answer.

I don't really know what is used brand name wise. Company's like MSD coat(waterproof) their ignition boxes with the same suff. It's a polymer spray on coating for electronics. A search of the web might yield the answer.

Thanks for the congratulatory comments guys! :)

Here's what "mynewfan" (ebay seller who I got my fan from) has to say about how they waterproof their fans:

WATERPROOF to IP55 - These fans were modified at the mynewfan shop to exceed IP55 conditions, that is to say the fan does not fail due to water or dust ingress. The electonics and the field coils were encapsulated in a UL recognized, MIL-I-46058C polyurethane. A synthetic grease, used on Mil/Aero Fans, has been added to the bearing shields and shaft to prevent corrosion. Polyurethane was also brushed on the stator to retard corrossion.

Along with a VFRness, I bought an accessory fuse panel kit (4x switched lines). I think this should make the dual fan conversion a bit easier to install.
