I didn't take the time to get on CMSNL and check the 1988, but the 86/87 have a spacer/washer behind the starter reduction gear held by the small shaft. People always lose it down in their oil drain tray when they take it apart. Make sure you have it (need it).

Also, you do want the heat shield for the carbs, if that wasn't answered.

    Everything is looking great!!

^^ So in my photo, I placed item #12 on the outside of the gear reducer. I will pull the starter and gear and tuck that behind the reduction gear. I will need to dig up the heat shield dangit. Thanks for the save! Happy Canada Day Stray! Do you get to blow shit up or just hang and drink a cold one?

You shouldn't have to remove the starter if you don't disturb anything. And even if you do it is possible with the starter intact.

image.jpg Spacer located behind gear reducer. image.jpg . Heat shield re-installed. PITA with the bike mostly together.

Some folks do the fireworks thing, most cities have a big fireworks display, I dont bother. I was out on my bike and working on the farm (as usual). Invited some neighbours over in later afternoon for a cold beer and burgers on the BBQ.

    Thanks Tom!

Long list of to-do, but nearly as soul crushing now that she runs.

The steering head bearings need tightened
    Hardware for the front fairing.
    Front fender clean and paint.
    Tighten chain.
    New seat cover, black
Rear brake line, master to remote res.
Last is custom fit high mount Tyga muffler.

mini test ride went well. Not enough room for 4, 5, and 6th though. Tomorrow.

Mine has two mufflers from Leovince, originally made for a 1050 Speed Triple.
When I first heard about the actual 4-1 Hindle I thought about the opportunity to mount it on my FJ. I wonder if it's possible to mount it on my FJ.
In the german VFR-OC a member tuned an imported US-Interceptor with a hindle with excellent results. I have no Idea, if the exit angles of the heads are different.

depending upon mileage and inspection of head bearings and races under a magnifier, you might just wanna replace them with oem.

^^ SM, I already upgraded to new bearings (only OE option), but I didn't want to over torque them. At the time I didn't believe I could get full compression with the tools in hand. I will tighten tomorrow. Also the top nut was not even tightened...shheeeesh. I knew I would forget something.

^^ FJT, The Hindle will not work on 88/89. The exhaust exit is different. I have talked to them several times. Bummed but I have most of what I need to convert to my Tyga can. Just need some welding. :)

If all goes well by the end of tomorrow I should have a mostly complete ready to ride motorcycle. :)

if bearing adjustment is too loose you might hear and feel a click when stopping hard; if too tight the bike will want to wander left and right and need constant correction.

Alright, steering cured for now. Tightened the top nut, but I need to buy a 30mm socket for final torque. Chain adjusted.

    Time for a highway run.

    image.jpg

Highway run was successful. Top up with fuel, now my gauge kicked in. Suspension needs adjusting in the front. Judders under low speed high brake pressure.
Just like the Hawk, I seemed to have under lubed the speedo drive. High pitched whine coming from the front wheel.
Carbs and engine run like a Swiss watch!
time to take a break from the lift and just knock these out at my leasure.

    looks brilliant, great job !

are you gonna find a shorter rear brake line, the one you have is way tooooo looooong.

without the lower fairings the bike looks tough and muscular and will run cooler.

^^ yeah, it offends many. I am on budget lock down so it will go eventually. Lil Red will look this way for awhile. Just want everything accessible for the longer commute ride. She has expressed 2 x coolant leaks and 1 fuel leak while I was warming her up for the highway. Seems fine after that ride though.
I do seem to have a heavy like if naked bikes apparently.
    Hells yes indeed!

So roughly 100 miles post rebuild. Chain needed loosening, was running too tight (good now). Coolant seems to weep from my fancy Samco/Euro trash hose clamps. Pissing me off. Fuel leak cured by using proper clamp on fuel tank. I do have a low speed guddering which I think is caused by a lack on compression on the head bearing. This is the theory from my x race engineer from the notes I have given him on front end feel.
Everything is torqued by the book, but I don't think my compression lock nut is getting full compression. Could be from powder coat on each end of the frame head. I was contemplating putting a fender washer under the dust seal. thoughts? I may just have to double check and possibly file down some powder coating. bleh..
Oh and the RC51 woodpecker stickers do not look good on the front fairing. Time to scrub.. again.
