    I solved it! It was the bad pulse generator. Installed a new, albeit used, one, a new gasket, new oil, new filter while I was at it, and the bike works perfectly. Five hundred miles, and it has not failed once. Very gratifying. Many thanks to all the posters who weighed in with knowledge and advice.
