Anyone got any stiffer springs for 91 VFR forks.

I am finding the stock are way too soft.

    Any ideas?

I did...but they want $170 for set of springs...I give them maybe $20.00..

I can get forks from a cbr 929 for the same price!!!

    Looking for a cheaper alternative..

Spacers or maybe replace your fork oil with some of that super hold hair gel from WalMart.

    You mean Dippity Do?

Can I make spacers out of pVC pipe?

Will a thicker fork oil really help?

    thanks

Dippity Do is what we use here. WalMart has some that costs less.

No, but you can make really nifty spudguns out of either ABS or PVC. Pick up a can of elcheapo hairspray at Wallys too. ;)

Yep, higher viscosity oil will help. Try some progressively wound springs. Be aware that if you eventually go with gold valves you'll have to go back to the non progressives.

Depending on your weight I might have some used Sonic springs available. If not, a new set is only $85 so either way I'm sure I could help you out. Just shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Change out your oil to 15wt. Or cut off a couple inch's (5 cm) of spring and add longer spacers.

+1, did just that, works great,

cost: 1.50 for a pvc pipe in the right diameter.

    cheap enough?

only adding longer preload tubes as some suggested will not change your spring RATE, will just make the front ride higher and make the bike steer slower.

I put Racetech 1.0k/g springs in my 91 with Motul 10wt. Springs are no more than 109.99. So who ever is selling you springs for 170 bucks, obviously doesnt know what their talking about. I put the 1.0 's in and still would like a stiffer front end. But in your case... When was the last time the fork oil was replaced? If its been a while, I would just rebuild with 15wt oil and add a few 1" washers for your preload.

But if you want, you can throw the 929 or RC51 forks on the front and then the skies the limit.

Thats what I was thinking but Honda told me that 15wt oil alone wouldn't do it for me.

I do believe the fork oil is original.

Should I be concerned with thicker oil and the cold north here?

1" washers? you mean like the home depot kind?

    thanks

The $170 was from racetech's own pricing list...!!!! I guess they are inadvertanly saying go through the dealer instead of us...lol

Those prices could be from several things. The Loony vs the USD, shipping and handling, all that protective tarriff shit the Canadian gubbamint hangs you guys with and the policys some manufacturers have to protect thier dealers making thier prices MSRP. Just like bikes, the dealers who sell stuff, own it and can sell it or give it away. Better not to ask them to give you shit unless you don't mind rejection.

As far as I know the Canadian and American Washers from Homer's are the same as they are in China. Not a clue about the ABS or PVC pipe.

15wt wouldnt probably do it, or it may. I believe stock is 5wt. And I also believe that the stock springs are .600k/g. And from I understand about springs when I was doing all the research. After wear and tear on the progressive OEM springs, after time they start becoming less and less stiff. Meaning after 20k miles, they may be rated at .400k/g.

Im not sure how many miles are on your bike? I'm not sure about thicker oil and cold weather. If anything to me, ride would be stiffer in colder weather with thicker oil. But I really dont know.

Inside the forks, there is (2) 1" washers sitting above and below the spacer, that spacer is considered your preload on the 91's. From what I understand, if you make the spacer to big, youll bottom out your springs and have a rough ride. But if you add 2-5 more washers in there. Ranging from 1/8" to 1/2" you can add more preload to take out the diving. May not be what your looking for. But its a shot. Yes washers from HD.

If you cant get the springs for less than 170.00 . I can order for you here, ship to you, if you want that option.

Question: If I throw 929 or rc51 forks in what else do i need?

Do I need to replace the front wheel, rotor, master cylinder, caliper?

I don't think it is as easy as just swapping out the forks. Though I could be wrong

Forks, Lower Triple, and Steering Stem
    Front Wheel with Rotors
    Upper Triple
    Front Brake Calipers
    Front Fender
    Master Cly
    Custom brake lines.

Just from the research I have done. May be a few other lil odds and ends. That swap will run around the 400.00 range or a lil more depending on where you can get your parts from.

Seems like to much effort for the "cool" effect forks...

I'll look at sonic springs...I heard they are good also...

    thanks very much!!
