Yeah that was a good ride there Matt, for those who think you can only haul ass on a busa ought to check out the miniceptor!

And yes, I wasn't going 100% because there are a lot of blind corners at the dragon, I've never crashed in my 45k miles of riding and don't care for the glory just to get there 5 seconds sooner.

    I understand completely.

I got the wrong impression when I read the video description: "1999 Honda VFR chasing a 1985 VF500F"

I agree with you 100%...lots of blind corners. Better to take it easy.

I know about carbs AND fuel injection.

Carbs are simpler than fuel injection?
The fuel injection has a throttle body JUST LIKE a carb.
The fuel injection has a fuel pump JUST LIKE VF carbs do.
The fuel injection has a controller UNLIKE a carb set up.
The fuel injection has injectors UNLIKE a carb set up.
The fuel injection has a fuel pressure regulator UNLIKE a carb set up.
The fuel injection has at least one oxygen sensor UNLIKE a carb set up.
The fuel injection has a map sensor (crank/cam position sensor) UNLIKE carbs.
You have to have an IBM style LAPTOP COMPUTER to tune a Fuel injection system and a carb only needs a SCREWDRIVER and CARB SYNC tool.
And if you want your fuel injected bike to really be tuned right it needs to be put on a DYNO. Ask Factory Pro experts about that. Because fuel air ratios with wide band oxygen sensors are still not that accurate. Garbage in-Garbage out.

There is no way you can say a carb is more complicated than fuel injection.

And you cannot ride it down the road with the laptop plugged in to see how it all works while it is in gear at speed. That is why you will need the DYNO time.

I agree about the ease of using a laptop computer and the benefits of fuel injection too but once the carb is tuned and set up you do not need to mess with it.

Fuel injection is better, but it has a lot of complex and sensitive expensive parts.

Yes you can bore it out .020 over to .040 over stock to get a bigger piston. Much more power can be obtained with a higher lift cam.
Or you can use stock size high compression pistons but that will cause more problems than it solves for a street bike.

    Thanks for the post.

I'm not sure there is much to be gained with over sized pistons - but I'd like to hear more about this and the higher lift cam. Perhaps you could start a new thread on the 500's engine design and possible upgrades?

On this note, I had read in a article from back in the day:

"The trick is to know what's too much and what's not enough. According to Honda spokesman, the 500 engine is pretty much at its displacement limit." p.27, Cycle, July, 1984.

I do not know if a high performance cam was offered by any company for the 500.
I will check that out. Many sport bike riders just ride stock bikes so there are less high performance parts than there used to be in the past. Most up grades are for external parts like brakes ,shocks, and exhausts. Stuff that is easy to change.

Not true for a street or offroad engine. Maybe for a track bike dedicated to one location. Living along the Rockies, I can ride anywhere from 5000 to 14,000 ft above sea level. Fuel injection will monitor the burn and adjust for the maximum performance regardless of altitude. With Carbs I can F' around every time I plan to ride at a specific altitude or I can just live with a performance loss at certain points. Even changes in ambient temperature like winter driving and summer driving technically have an affect on carburated performance.

The benefits of the "complex expensive" parts generally outweigh the cost.

Megacycle offers hardfaced performance cams and hardfaced rockers.

There has been some discussion on the VF500F valve train recently. Megacycle for cams and rockers - Kibblewhite or R/D Springs for performance spring kits and valves. It's a fairly substantial investment...

Willie - better to start a new thread then to jump onto one that is already insanely complicated. Also, no offence, but you will bet better responses if you write with a little better clarity and avoid the text-speak.

Regarding your questions: Look down over the last several pages in the 1st gen section and you will see a few wheel conversion threads. I think that there is one in the sticky as well. If your goal is just wider tires, you can go a little wider on the stock rims, but tire selection is limited.

You will also find in the following thread that Dannyhoo installed a GSXR fairing on his bike. He makes it sound easy, but I think that the average person might have a hard time making the required modifications.

Good luck, and don't ignore basic maintenance and performance in pursuit of cosmetic mods. You can spend a lot of money on a bike that just ends up sitting on the laneway!
