Since I didn't know what size I needed a few years ago, I bought a set of 3 Stanley sparkplug sockets at Wal-Mart. One of them was sure to work, right? And one of them did. I consider the other 2 a bonus.

I use an extension with a locking ball bearing, so there's no danger of the socket slipping off the extension when removing/installing the plugs.

Better, as long as the fine points of plugs has come up in answer to the original question, to IMO, use a torque wrench and a smidgen of lubricant on the threads to aid not only ease of installation and subsequent removal but to secure hopefully a new crush seal. Both are not expensive when the remote potential for a screw up could at least save a teardown and some rather expensive machining for a gowed thread or a fix with a Helicoil.

Someone also pointed before the exorcism of the demons that Champion plugs were not metric. I have an air cooled BMW with a set of Krauser fourvalve heads installed that required metric Champions. Past tense and now fitted with NGK's after finding a real plug expert who turned me on to a cross reference source. The Champions were fine but were only sold in packs of four for, as I recall about 13-14 bucks a pop and in a single heat range.

For those wishing to learn about the aftermarket heads, Google will provide. There is one entry showing a 1980 Krauser MKM 1000. The data supplied states this bike is equipped with the special heads. Not so..

Sorry bout the partial hijack and I will make a valiant attempt to take my spanking and not whine like a little girl when the ruler falls upon my dainty hands.
