    Bump.

I just ordered 3 gallons of the T-6 but it's in 5W-40, should that be OK? it's a pretty wide viscosity range, and I wouldn't want it too thin to protect the crank on a cold start.

That is fine my 5th gen shifted like a hot knife through butter after using it. Nice on the hwy too. Best oil you can get for a bike period, Imo.

Okey, so has anyone ever heard of always using just the regular oil like Honda H4 then switching to a synthetic oil and all of a sudden having an oil seepage problem? this happened to me when I had my Duc 900SS---seems to have done something to my head gasket and had a very slow oil leak

I have heard of that problem, duccman. I have heard a number of explanations for it too.

I've used the honda HP4 in cool weather, <35C, bike tends to run hotter over that ambient. Doesn't make a noticeable difference power wise but increases mileage.
Silkolene is ok but has a habit of holding heat which means backing off an extra mile or so before stopping it or the oil boils. Have also had it react with a cheapie oil filter oring too.
motul is gold plated pricing over here.
mobil is ok but doesn't get the mileage of the honda HP4.
castrol/bp lasts well but gives crappy mileage.

Wunnerful chit-chat about oil and not one blown engine so far. Harleydoods excluded. Nobody told them why they shouldn't run the McDonald's pomme fritte organic, gluten free 50 weight.

Something all oils have in common is: none of them flow good enough when the engine and oil are below operating temperature. So whatever oil it is, we have to let the engine warm up . The 5-40 is just going to be a bit less unkind during warmup than a 10 or 15 w40.

Why would the 5-40w be less kind at start up than the slightly heavier viscosity oil? I was under the impression that the lighter viscosity flowed better in lower temps, i.e. start up, and should offer slightly better protection. Isn't it in colder climates where the lighter viscosity is usually recommended? Warming an engine up to operating temp before applying load is always good as it allows metal parts and seals to expand to their operating tolerance.

You're completely right, (but I did say 'less unkind'!)
