Wow Badbily, you're kind of a downer... I suppose you get all bent out of shape when you find out people sometimes break the speed limit on their motorcycles too.

Anyway, at a local Honda dealership here in UT I have an offer of $14,500 for the bike. OTD will be $15,780. I think I'll go put my $500 down to reserve the next one they pull off the truck.

Does anyone think it's weird that I want to be the one to dealer prep the bike?

Here in Canada, msrp for VFR1200 is $18,299. In Alberta, we only pay 5% GST, no provincial sales tax.
Where they really get us Canadians is on our paycheques. The Feds take approximately 1/3 of my pay every 2 weeks and tax the shit out of me on every thing I buy through GST. (clothes, fuel, etc) Food is not taxed (yet), but snack food (chips, candy bars, etc) is. It costs a lot to be Canadian

Dude. Do the whole quote then look up the definitions of avoidance and evasion. You will find even Uncle Sam says the same thing in nearly the same words.

I do get pushed out of shape at animal and child abuse. Over the double nickel or thereabouts? LOL

What is painfully obvious here is that you have little experience at buying from these folks whose job it is to put as much of your money in their pockets as possible. I suppose if you have money to piss away then go for it.

Sticking with my story here, get it in writing. Whatever your friendly dealer tells you is not worth shit at your bank, your credit union, or anywhere in this universe.

Almost forgot, the license and registration for cars and bikes is not all that much here either and BB don't do guilt trips or Psych 101.

Do I detect a question about dealer prep and maybe a little more of your hard earned money flying out the window when you asked about doing it yourself? Did your friendly dealer tell you that new bikes had to be uncrated and set up by the dealer? Did you get shown that in writing or did some sales dude look like he was about to burst into sympahetic tears when he told you it was only going to cost you a few paltry dollars more.

Best bet? Hit the net and learn how to wheel and deal with these guys. They know how and you don't really have a clue.

That's not it at all... The intent of the question was to find out if anyone knew what the dealer cost was roughly... I'm all about supporting my local dealerships, they play a large role in the local motorcycle community... Supporting the local clubs, schools, racing, etc... I want them to make some money off the sale, they have bills to pay as well... I just want it to be reasonable...

As far as dealer prep goes, it's not about the fees at all. I'll pay the fee, I just want to do it. I've taken apart and too many motorcycles that weren't reassembled correctly after they returned from being serviced at a dealership. Over the course of owning the bike I'll be elbow deep in the engine at some point and I think it would be kind of cool to know that I've done every single drop of maintenance on the bike since it came from the factory. The only time this gets to be a problem is Warranty work, but I'm on good enough terms with most of the Honda shops in Salt Lake even that isn't a problem.

I hope they know how, it's their job... I'm not sure if "don't have a clue" accurately represents myself... I seem to be doing just fine in the motorcycle department last time I checked...

I paid MSRP, but was given about 3k more for my trade-in than I was expecting.
I'm sure when the deal was finalized in their computer however, they gave me the correct value for the trade-in, and sold the bike for only $12,999. Then they could move the difference in the sales tax on that 3k back into a bit more profit on the bike.... so long story short, the real number was probably somewhere around $13,250.
I used to work at this dealer and am still personal friends with a finance gal, so I have a pretty good idea how they move numbers around.

As far as doing your own dealer prep? Good luck. Dealers are not allowed to do this, due to liability issues. If you have a really good or long term relationship with the particular dealer, they might let you get away with it on the QT. The service department doesn't typically like this either though, since they are losing money. The sales, parts, and service departments are all sort of their own seperate businesses operating under one roof. Service charges sales for the new bike setup, so they lose some $$ if this is allowed as well.

So are you good enough friends with the finnance person to tell us what the dealers price is on a 1200 and multiples therof? The different departments may seem to be different but for the most part they are all under the same ownership. Setup and dealer prep is a liability thing with the manufacturers. It is also business and is negotiable. It's all negotiable. The slick dealers will drag in a sales manager, the owner, the owners churrens, the service writer or the guy who sweeps up at night in order to make as much as possible on any sale. To really check on the "deal" you got trading in your old bike, what would be needed is the data on the bike and then feedback on what the dealer is asking for your old bike.

15k is a chunk of change. If any buyer is in the dark about how dealers operate, the dealer has the advantage. Will the dealer use that advantage?. Now there is a really dumb question..

There was a dealer in my hood that "supported" racing too. They would jack up the prices on everything then discount it for the racers. The racers caught on to that shit real quick. The dealer is now OOB.

So as not to depress ol Warren any further over taxing issues, a couple of handy-dandy websites for we dedicated few who have 1200's

GasBuddy.com - Find Low Gas Prices in the USA and Canada

    www. sitorsquat.com

I looked for a site where a fella could be sure and pick up some fresh Jo-jos. I think we may have to wait a while on that one. Not much luck so far even searching Idaho.
