One of the guys I talk with on a chopper site has an interesting take on working on bikes that kinda goes with BB's take on stock set up bikes... "I'ts not an icon, it's a mechine. If it's not exactly what you want it to be, Chop it, Cut it, Weld it, put on and take off till it works for you. Then repeat." Whats draws me to the VFR is the powerplant, everthing else is window dressing.

I would like to take mine apart and replace it with a newer one..... not really... but I would love to have a newer one so I can "play" with the old girl and actually take the thing all the way apart... clean it... paint it... and put it back together.. without having to do it all in a few months...

I agree with most of what your guy says but I draw the line at those chrome grips with the three foot pink fringe. ;)

In my situation I have not seen a lot of faded red paint on my '97 Honda ST1100. It looks like the same paint code as the VFR. I just replaced a few pieces of tupperware and I can't tell the new stuff from the old. The new stuff just has more "shine" to it. I think that's mostly due to me not washing the bike. Now I did attempt to get some paint to repair my side cases. The aftermarket color was close but not a perfect match. There is a little metal flake in the original factory paint that is hard to duplicate. And by the way, my MC is not a garage queen. It's spent plenty of time out in the sun. Mostly because I can't fit it into my cluttered garage.
