Saturday I'm looking at an 1986 VFR 700. 60k miles. Stock except for Kerker silencer can. Odometer quit working ~40k miles ago. Seat re-upholstered in all red. Fuel petcock won't shut off completely. Two small cracks in tail piece plastic. Tires probably have aged out. It has been ridden in the last few weeks. $1800 asking.

Are there any major issues that won't be apparent from an inspection and test ride, such that I should not buy it?

If I do buy it, what are VFR700 unique things I should anticipate taking care of?

p.s. I revived a BMW K100RT that had been sitting in a shed for three years, so I don't mind putting some work in.

There are really no deal breakers on the 86 - 87 VFRs. If it has been maintained at all, they are pretty damn bullet proof.

Typical possibility of a bad reg/rect and/or melted plug. Starter clutches can give problems sometimes not catching.

I've got 4. One with nearly 60K on it, runs perfect. I have personally seen four 86 VFR with well over 100K and still run strong.

Thanks for the endorsements! Picked it up Saturday night. Found out it's got about 40k miles on it.
