Bike is running fine; no other issues than the bright lights still don't work. Going to try to go through the wiring in the next couple of days.

Just a thought, have you checked the brights themselves (bulb/fuse/switch/plug)

Replaced a burned out bright 3 weeks ago, so I doubt both went simultaneously. Switch checked out good. High beam indicator works. Is there a relay that would affect only high beams?

If the low beams work and the bike starts OK, clues point to bad switch contacts in the HI/LOW switch (or bad relay??), not to r/r.

+1 - check for blown bulbs!

I am not sure whether your Gen had always on dipped beams as standard, but if they were turned on and the RR started playing up, it can start feeding pretty high volts (60+) into wiring and bulbs designed for just 12-15 volts! The fact you replaced a failed bulb recently may have just been an early sign of the RR failure, and you may find that both have gone this time. I assume you checked to see if a fuse has blown. Only other contender is the hi/low beam switch.

Update: burned out another set of high beams, so I assumed the R/R is going out. I had put 3,500 miles on the bike in Aug 2013 & worn the tires down to the cords, parked it for the winter.

I have it torn apart now doing annual maintenance (coolant/oil change/bolt check) & just ordered tapered bearings headset, new brake handle, & LED'S for burned out dash lights (another indicator the R/R is going). Going to order R/R & VFRness from wiremybike.com next paycheck, then tires after that. Hoping to get her on the road by May 1st~

Nothing beats that feeling of confidence when you know your electrical system is straightened out!

Before I connected the voltage regulator, I tested the stator outputwith a voltmeter per the instructions on the R/R box (Rick's). A good solid 70+ volts AC at 5000 rpm and a good 18 volts AC at idle. Connected the R/R and got a steady 14.3 volts DC at idle and 14.5 at 5000 rpm.
