Makes sense, thanks for clarifying. I was always iffy about opening them because I wasnt sure how the contamination worked once opened, this makese total sense.

I changed the oil to the high end synthetic ester motul stuff and so far its much improved. I still feel a little spinning when i shift up to 2nd gear but its nothing like before and it hasnt kicked me out yet.

Also, pre loading the shifter seems to completely solve it in the few times I tried it. I am not used to doing it so i need to get in the habbit to do it all the time if its going to be better for my gearbox.

I'm having a very similar issue. Clutch engagement at the end of lever travel, notchy gearshifts, trouble downshifting into first. I replaced the hyd. fluid in the clutch last year when I did the chain and cleaned everything. But I did use some fairly old brake fluid. My clutch shows no signs of slippage. Could this also be due the clutch plates wearing? As in, the fiber plates are still working but getting near their usable life? How is the clutch adjusted, if at all?

Thanks for that info, I read the manual to mean that adjusting at the handle only adjusts how far out the clutch lever moves, I didnt know it would adjust the friction zone position on the clutch, i will try to adjust it.

It will slightly adjust the engagement. Mostly, it will keep an errant finger from making it slip at an inopportune moment~

It doesn't adjust the friction zone on the clutch. That is non-adjustable. You can only determine how far out from the bar the clutch starts to engage/disengage. One of the issues with our hydraulic clutch.

Clicking you hear in neutral is fairly normal and does not represent any problem. Without any load, friction plate tabs can move back and forth between segments in clutch basket and cause a brattle. To reduce the noise, a proper carb synch or FI throttle plate alignment is the first thing to try.

Absolutely correct; the tranny on my 2007 VFR800 is the worst I've ever had with a Honda, but the rest of the bike is close to perfect so whatever.
