I am a big supporter of free speech, and didn't support our entrance into Iraq; but to protest at someone's funeral? That is just tasteless. Always.

    But
    1) they are protesting at funerals where they don't even know the person's views.
    2) they are protesting in view of the people who have no ability to make the changes they seek
    3) It is clear that the protests are clearly hurtful, and no one could deny knowledge that they would be, to family and friends who are already greiving and hurt

So their protests have no chance of having any chance of effecting any change, and are hurtful to others. So why do it. No matter what your beleifs are, why do something that only hurts someone else?

I would support though, and I don't know why it hasn't been done, is finding out where these idiots work and protesting there, to either shut down the business -- if they are self employeed, or if they work at a company, get them fired.

Just because someone has the "right" to do something, doesn't mean they should do it. Respect, sympathy, decorum, manners, ethics, and morals should be factored in. Those cretins possess none of those.

Thanks 02. I've never heard of the Patriot Guard. I'd like to join them if they are around my area.

The WBC should be shot, hung and sent to the Pakistani front in that order! Yes they have a right to free speech. BUT not a right to disturb others right to a peacefully and tranquil life. I don't under stand how they are let to protest at the church or grave. Put them across town next to the sewer plant. They still can exercise their right to protest there.

I suppose their next sign will read GOD HATES HOGS

If they are anything like the majority of these hyper-fundamentalist groups, the leadership is probably off somewhere cheating on or swapping their wifes and sucking each other's weiners, it's just a matter of time till they come out of the closet.

The WBC are very successful trolls. They make it a point to instigate trouble and coerce someone into hitting them, throw something at them, etc. Then they sue them for all they're worth and typically get away with it. The Patriot Guard Riders approach is exactly what needs to be done - the WBC are attention whores, and just standing there ignoring them is the best offense. Plastering them all over the news and media is exactly what the WBC wants.

I joined the PGR email list for my state a couple of months ago... I haven't gone to any of their events yet, partly because it is only just starting to get warm here now, but I also haven't really looked into their religious standpoint (if they even have one).

I am a proud Vietnam Army Vet,. and when I came back to the States I was greeted by fellow American civilians calling me baby killer and all sorts of bad negative things. I still remember all the crap Oliver North had to deal with. Well now all of sudden it is fashionable to be a Vet. The problem with people protesting has existed for some time and the anti-military message gets worse. This has been a problem for sometime for Vets that have fought for our Great Country and it has gotten worse. just my two cents

I am a proud member of the PGR and rode with them often when I was in Michigan. They are far less organized here in VA, so I have not ridden with them here.

While they are primarily a Harley and (Gold) Winger crowd (at least in MI), they are open to anyone who wants to ride with them.

I had to always position myself far away from the protesters, as I can not ensure I won't eat one or ten of them. But I enjoyed the other activities we did as well. The PGR has been around for a long time (came out of American Legion Riders), and if you check out our national site (Home), I'm sure you will find rides in your area, like welcome home rides (my fav) and such, that don't put you in direct contact with the protesters.

As a vet, who has one daughter out, and a son who is still in, while I absolutely hate what they are peddling, it is EXACTLY those rights that I and my family (as well as all our brothers and sisters) fight and die for. There is a bill in congress to limit protests, following the rules in National Cemeteries, that would keep all protests 500 or 1000 feet or yards (depending on the bill) from the funeral. It has enough support at this time, it is expected to pass, and as long as it doesn't have a million riders, the President has pledged to sign it.

I too am a devout Atheist, but to me this has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with dignity of the fallen.
