When Honda lowered the VTEC engagement point on the VFR800 in 2006 I asked the service manager at my local Honda dealer if it would be possible to swap just the ECU to an earlier model VFR800 and he gave me a flat "No". He said the programming for the new ECU was different than the programming used on the '02 to '05 bikes.

Another thing to keep in mind MC is that the fuel injectors used on the '06 to '09 bikes are also different than the ones used on the '02 to '05 bikes. Which is prolly another reason why your Honda dealer was reluctant to install just the ECU from that '06 into your '04.

After searching and dealing with shady salvage yards I finally found my 2002-2005 VFR PGM-FI unit (the ECU). I have had that part number burned in my head for the last 9 months.

Money was a issue because I did not feel like forking down $900 for a new part along with a needed valve adjustment.

After doing some research, I finally found one new for $550. Power Sport Plus seems to have some excellent prices.

Perfect timing as sunny days are coming and I need to ride!

Its good to hear you have tracked down a replacement part and the VFR will be back on the road soon.

But did you track down what caused the original ECU to fail during your road trip? At $550 a time, you won't want it to happen again!

Honda dealership who diagnosed the problem saw nothing else wrong with the bike that would trigger this. He said it was just a fluke and a faulty ECU. I'm going to have my local mechanic check out the bike when he installs the new one. I found a place that fixes ecu's and I might have the old one fixed if it's feasible.

Bike has ran great for sometime, this has been the only issue. Lets hope for a smooth riding season and no more issues as I have a 10 day ride planned.

And repairing the ecu is a big if. If it's even cost worthy when I could just buy new.
