I've never heard of lead plugs in my years of wrenching on cars. A photo or service bulletin about this would be appreciated. Thanks

I had never heard of them either until one day I was at a machine shop to pick up a cylinder head and I asked about the lead plug with the date stamp on it and he told me it was called a tell tale plug so that a machinist would know that if the plug was melted that the cylinder head was warped or not worth repairing.

Are you sure this guy wasn't blowing smoke up your tail? That sounds like something I'd tell a friend over a beer. I once convinced a coworker that women only shit every three days and that's why they are so crabby - constipation will wear on a person's nerves ya know.

Based on the melting point of lead, stated above, it's hard to make this theory add up. Maybe someone yanked his chain and he didn't know any different?

This is true. They don't keep their mouths closed long enough to build up back pressure
