Sorry, Squirrelman, I gave up when I saw the over-tightened bolt. I guess it will be fun to remove the broken bolt shaft.

    Great-looking bike, though.

If you have the carbs out double or triple check your floats for damage and check that float level...

Gotta study the service manual to see how that's done properly; measure and record what you have to start with, and don't change anything if you are nearly on target. Not easy to get right cuz the smallest change in the adjusting tab makes a much larger change in float height, so you're likely to go back-and-forth for awhile. You might have a leaky float needle causing a black plug and fuel smell, but that usually produces a blackish smoke.

The plug you call oily looks normal to me, so don't worry yet.

White smoke usually means water and blue usually means you are buring oil.

Please observe Rule # 1. When you get pissed off, STOP WORKING FOR THE DAY! A frustrated mechanic breaks or damages more items. The time off overnight gives you time to think about the problem. My best solutions usually wake me up about 4am. The work the next day always seem easier and goes much smoother.

I hope you can get the remainder of the bolt out, if you can't find a friend that has a set of "EZ-Outs". You need to drill small hole in bolt and run the EZ-Out in, it has a left hand thread which will undo bolt as you tighten. Put plug back in first! Don't over tighten new bolt, old bolt may have been over tighten before and weak, don't feel bad. Clean grunge off with Simple Green and monitor how much it leaks or weeps, may not be a big issue, and can wait till you can replace gaskets.

FYI: I downloaded a Service Manual (PDF) for my VFR800 for $10.00 on a German site called Tradebits, Google Tradebits Service Manuals.
