I bought a new 2005 v-tech and i was confused by the engines versatility. After riding only cruisers and driving car i tried to pamper my new baby(after the break in period) and almost never got into V-Tech range. But it is important to not that these engines are not car engines and are not cruisers, they are designed to run at higher RPM's and thus require them. more rev's moves more oil and is good. Personally since our bikes are good at anyrange ride for you, be high enough if rev's for what your doing...always have power available so at a flick of the wrist your out of danger, for more spirited riding keep em high. As a bad habit i tend to stay or go into 6th far to early in casual riding..
I keep above 4,000 rpm (as a floor), and when I am riding it harder I try to make sure thta the revs stay above the vtec threshold (6,500 to 7,000) so I don't find myself transitioniing from 2 valve to 4 valve mode in the middle of a corner. It may not be as serious as I expect, but then again I don't really want to find out! I always feel the engine 's pain below 4,000 rpm. what thet means is that in Ontario I rarely get into 6 th gear! As long as it isn't "chucking", ride it the way you want. I don't think you can hurt it no matter how you ride it. I tend to keep the r's a little on the low side unless I want to air it out.
The engine seems to just run better up in the 6000+ range. Sometimes I just roll on and off keeping it in vtec just for the sound and response. When I'm cruising around I keep the revs around 4500rpm. Its such a flexible engine though.... You can ride it however you feel like and it performs great. Spring anyone? I miss my bike!!!!
