You can get a close match on the yellow at Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes. Unfortunately, it won't be an exact match in certain lighting because the Honda OEM paint is a two stage basecoat. Taking the OEM paint code to Sherwin Williams and a search of their database should yield their custom mix which beautifully matches in brighter light but yellows out a bit in low light conditions. Cost was about $80/quart for their low cost Dimension brand.

You wouldn't want to use it to paint an upper fairing and expect it to match the lower. But if you painted all adjoining panels, I think it would be ok. I think if your damage was up front, you could paint all of the front panels and not have to paint the rear, etc...

Stock paint is good paint. Stock paint is almost perfecly applied by robots. Otherwise, stock paint sucks even mellow yellow.

Even the single stage yellow sucked. I do not have the best of equipment or experience but am the kind of person who would rather try and fail than not try at all.

The yellow is difficult to tell how well it covers and I was plagued with fisheye since my equipment is less than ideal. Had the pleasure of resanding and then taking to a professional. Well not exactly a professional but someone with immeasurable more experience and the facilities/tools to do a proper job. I had much better success with blue.

I was warned once not to eat yellow snow

Here is something that has been bothering me all day. I have decided to just keep this one, after a few rides I can’t part with it and I dooo want to make the color work so here is a really, really rough sketch I did at work with my bic pen and highlighter in about 10mins. Black racing stripe down center, yellow seat with stripe and border, tinted wind screen, blacked out front and rear lights, fairing flush turning signals behind tinted plexi. Keeping all chrome accents and adding chrome mesh behind the side vents. I’m going to start this weekend hopefully this can be complete in the couple weeks. Again this is just an idea and the plan it to use this layout to cover very minor damage and save me from spraying yellow two stages. The design in combination with removing the pair, linked brakes, adding the under seat exhaust, and frame sliders should be a great start. Forgive the sketch I’m not an artist. Thoughts?

It gets my vote. I like the black wings spanning sides and tank. All of the mods you mention here you should be able to find on the forum. I know the PAIR valve and Linked brakes were resurrected a few weeks ago. Here's the PAIR valve post http://vfrworld.com/forums/5th-generation-1998-2001/35929-how-pair-removal-5th-generation.html . Do a search for "linked brakes" or some derivative of those two words and you should be able to find a good how-to. And as always, post pictures of your progress.

    Cheers!

    The concept has promise IMO

The chrome makes me think something like "take the boy off the cruiser but...."

Leave the rest of the shit alone and ride the thing for a season before fucking with the brakes and PAIR.

I do appreciate your insight, I do want this bike to be good for this year before moving to FL but the paint and the brakes have got me bugging out. Normally I address the performance and make it look pretty later, but the mechanical condition of this bike is already perfect. So I will start on polishing the bike first and address the changes that have to be made to fit my riding style later. Since time is such a big factor for me, and this is to be my daily driver. It will give me the time I need to order parts and stockpile before blowing your VFR loving minds! Respectfully Submitted, The "Cruiser Boy" P.S. Pics Will Be Up Apon Completion

A properly functioning linked brake system should not be noticeable under normal conditions unless you are trying to use the rear brake to adjust geometry prior to a hard lean into turn three on the track. Being new to sportbikes, I can't help but wonder if it's the different style or an improperly operating system that has you bugged out.

Maybe try a proper bleed of the system. Regardless, making drastic changes to the mechanics of the bike so hastily is iladvised.

I look forward to seeing how your cosmetic work comes together.

I'll have to go a +1 on what Tink mentioned. I know there are some hard core enthusiasts on here who just can't stand the LBS, but would be curious to know why you need to dump it so quickly? Just a question - not condemning you.

Im sure its a combination of both my riding style (having to shift alot in stop and go traffic on base, and braking while holding the trottle in tight corners to avoid shifting and loosing control) and not being used to lbs on any bike. That made me jump to that decision. I might get used to the brakes but i need the bike to run smoother in low 1st. But enough excuses a good experienced rider adapts and overcomes...

The "transparent" colors ie red, yellow some of the blues and greens (phthalocyanine) are best done over a tinted under coat just a smidge darker than the finish.

Could be the fisheye was from silicone contamination. This can occur even with the use of some waxes or just near some of the furnture waxes. Best cure for this is a preventative shot of "Smoothie" in the paint. Lots of curves in a fairing the the inside curves are especially prone to the paint running and sagging.

That snow deal may be a genuine universal maxim..;)

    Bike looks good to me..

Before doing the PAIR mod, you may want to try to de-flap and de-snorkel the airbox, simple and easily reversible if it doesn't work for you. This was the first mod I did, I have since added a reusable air filter and a few other items for comfort and performance.

In my case, I think it was caused by condensation in the air compressor and insufficient moisture separator all caused by moistening the garage floor with a garden hose to prevent dust. Who can be sure, except it is usually accepted that the wrong tool will usually yield poor results.

cruiser-boy: you could try clamping off the PAIR fresh air lines. There are two flexible hoses that come from the airbox to the top of the valve cover. The 2000 model year is the 1st year of a closed loop FI system. So the O2 sensors in the exhaust do a double check of what the computer thinks should be happening for exhaust gases. The PAIR closes just off IDLE and so it is not supposed to affect air/fuel readings but some do swear that it does. Clamping off the hoses would be a simple test to see if it would have any improvement on your low RPM. I really suspect that you just need to learn to run higher RPMs than the V-twins you are used to. This engine is not built for low RPM torque.

I do not expect that changes to the flapper valve would help as it is well known in the engine tuning world that unrestricting the airbox sacrifices midrange torque in favor of high RPM horsepower. Which is why Honda has the flapper valve system in the first place.

I toyed with the same paint idea and heartily approve. :clap2:

The PAIR removal and de-flapping is about "sweet" intake noise (no performance gain) and reduced weight. I weigh 255 lbs. and my Supertrapp is music to my ears, so neither of those mods. is appealing to me.

As to LBS, I have been out riding with a buddy (he has a GSXR) through our mountains/canyons here in the valley and I don't have a problem keeping up or setting the pace. I don't do track time (yet), but from how it feels, I don't see a problem keeping the LBS long term for the occasional kind of aggressive street riding I do.

What I can see in my 5th gens. future, is getting a better shock and re-valve/spring the forks. So I would recommend those two things, along with some bar risers, taller windscreen, good tires and maybe a nice LED tail light conversion.

Can't wait to see how the paint comes out.

    Jose

Sorry about the total, I am prepared to offer you fifty bucks cash money for that old bike.

If it was red it would be worth at least another fiver.

both very good offers! but i have a good feeling about this project bike so fifty just wont do... and i may have been born on a cruiser but im at home on this VFR, thing drives itsself for the most part. ive been called a great many things, CB not being the worst of them lol. thankfully 90% of the damage is located on that one left front fairing, with a quatersize spot on the tank, and a scrap on the right rear im sure will buff out. should make for an interesting cover up job.
