Okay so wheels in motion is still closed on Saturdays but open Sunday.

Looks like I'll do the oil/filter change tomorrow and the break pads/air filter on Sunday.

Going to test the thermostat per Knights instructions right now to see if I need to add that to the list.

I'd love to help anyone in any way I can when it comes to this subject...

I'm now living vicariously through others' rides until another multi-thousand mile AM II trip. :)

Now that's what I'm talking about. What an amazing journey of epic proportions. I'm jealous just like every other who hasn't had a chance to experience such a trip yet. This kind of ride will be in my near future.

Wow, quite a lot post and even saw my name mentioned, where have I been?!

Welcome to The World GoingVFR! As Scubalong said, we work cheap around here, some good IPA or a bottle of Paddy Whiskey will get you time in my garage, of course best to present those items AFTER work is done

Although this weekend's time is already spoken for, just let us know when you want to ride, we'd be glad to meet up and ride with you or if time doesn't permit, just meet up and get acquainted.

Not sure your level of riding skill but there are so many places that can meet or exceed just about any skill level here in So Cal.

    Cheers!

Until the 8th gens. came along, 5th and 6th gen. VFR's with stock gearing and sprockets did read 10% fast on the speedometers. I thought everyone knew that. Never bothered me. BTW, if it were mine, I would not hesitate to run the snot out of it. I do that on a brand new bike (4K miles is brand new for a VFR).

Thanks again guys and I'll definitely take you guys up on both the ride and wrench offers.

I'm a strong A+++ rider on my couch but a solid B on the street/canyons. Bigger balls then brains but managed to survive riding for 30+ years off and on.

Dug into the oil change yesterday and have a clearer picture of how this ride was treated. She was definitely riden and put away dirty.

Gearing looks to be 16/43 is that +1 over stock?

The outside of the bike was pretty clean but I quickly found maintenance was a little lax. 2 bolts on the faring were stripped and it took a bit of work to get past those. The lower half of the engine has a lot of road grime. Looks like the counter sprocket might have a leak but it could also be too much oil on the chain and many miles of road grime stuck to that.

It does look like the top end may have been freshened up but the bottom end is too dirty to tell.

Spent 3 hours detailing it but still need to do more.

Wanted to get the breaks done this weekend but No one had the pads in stock so I'll order and do those next weekend.

To me it sounds like a solid engine except for a lot of clutch basket noise which completely goes away when the clutch is pulled.

Love to take one of you up on a look over and get an educated opinion of what I really need to address.
I'm in the sf valley but really like riding this thing so I'm willing to travel and have the side bags so there's room for beer!

    Who's around next weekend???

16/43 is stock gearing on the 6th gen, but the 5th gen has 17/43. Different internal ratios mean the top gear revs/road speed is the same however.

For brake pads if you've not already ordered, I highly recommend EBC HH pads. Don't forget to clean around the caliper pistons before you push them back into the caliper, and take a look at the sliding pins for each caliper to make sure they slide nicely.

A wise man suggested to me that leaving the bleed nipple open (with a draining hose attached) when pushing pistons back into the caliper was a smart move, as any grunge that had migrated down to the caliper was expelled and not pushed back into the master or proportioning valves, which made sense to me.

The speedo doesn't bother me much either plus having to do The math gives me something to do

My dad always told me you've got to blow the carbon out every once in a while so the outcome of that is I'm the type of guy you don't want to buy a used anything with a motor in it from. I'm notoriously tough on engines but I have proven with proper maintenance you can be tough and a well built engine can and will take the beating and still last.

I'll see what day next weekend works for me, as most weekends I get one day for myself and the wife and dog get me for the other day! If you want to do the brakes, I have all the tools to do the deed and you'll probably want to see how to bleed the linked braking system. I'm in Anaheim between several freeways so to get to my place is rather easy and only a 3-5 miles from any of the closest exits. I don't recall if you said you have new tires, let me know if you need new ones, I'll have you order them online and have them sent to my place and we can change them when you get here! Maybe we can get Scubalong to come by and lend a hand too. He knows how to work the tire changer now!

Thanks for the confirm on the gearing. Sprockets and chain all look newer so I'll leave it for now.

Cool on the pad and bleeding advice and especially cleaning the piston before pushing it back into the caliper. Not sure if I would have thought of that.
