Hey guys, we have done a complete carb rebuild, with proper float adjustment, and it still surged like mad, it's tuned perfect great response runs smooth just when you get to about 55 mph she surges. Weller refuses to believe it's the relays so we put in a brand new fuel pump and filter, she ran even better best she has ran to date but got her on the highway and the surge continues. There is nothing left but the relays but called Honda and they can no longer get them so the question? What do I do about the relays? We are stuck here any help is welcome.

relays shouldn't cause surges just the opposite in my understanding. I'd pm Toe cutter and ask him.

I have the 85 700 , and still trying to get the engine back together, stripped it down to bare bones and repainted red and black, can't wait to get it on the highway and bury the needle

Also ask him if this is something him and I may have extras of that we could send you. If he knows what's going on we may have the extra parts to help out. I have butt loads of spare crap. I just don't always remember what I have more than one of.

TOE has got us looking at a tank vacuum issue and tyring to bypass the relays to see if that helps. I'm going to ride to Weller's in a few with the cap open to see if that helps the vacuum issue but we going to try these 2 things and see where that gets us. Fred I'll let you know right now Weller is not sold on the relays as a problem cause we checked all the voltages IAW the manual and everything is reading good but I'm not ruling anything out, this bike hasn't had anything added it to it from the previous 2 owners and stuff gets old, it may look good on the surface but you can't always hold on to original stuff which is me and Wellers argument right now.

The problem is when they get hot so if your checking voltage when they are cold won't do any good. Toe probably has it right though.

Rode to Wellers with the tank open and no change, we bypassed the relays and at 1st it lessened a lot but was still there, Weller then adjusted the pilot screws and now its hit or miss, we went to a honda dealership in Fresno to look at the new VFR ( it's on my to do list) but they didn't have 1 in so Weller goes to the back to ask about pilot screw adjustment and there is an old geezer back they that wouldn;t give Weller the time of day until he said the bike was an 86 and that got his attention, he was full of knowledge then, seems to be a fan even has some carb knowledge, he told Weller to go back in the carbs and he had to replace 2 things ( can't remeber the name of then so sue me) but anyway he said that those were the primary culprit of surging they can look fine on the surface but if they get buildup in em they can cause all sorts of problems. He said if Honda can't order he gave us a site that would have them, will post that site after I talk to Weller. but thats where we going to next. The bike runs great though had several high speed runs on her and she does well. I'll keep you all posted.

Hey guys just checking in. All is well with the bike, Still putting her back together, but been on the road alot. Still have the surge issue but I have figured out how to throttle through itso it's good. Took it to a huge rally today that's about 140 mile round trip that's the furtherest I had her out so far but I ride her to work everyday. This bike even with my outdated suspension is great for me. Here is a picture of her as she is getting put back together, remember I'm not original but I think you guys can see where I'm going. I need to order my interceptor stickers now also. I also need to color match the screws on the side panals.

She is still a work in progress. What do you guys think?
