...and we're golden! Took the carbs back off, cleaned the jets out (again? I don't remember if I did that when I got the set or not...) and reassembled. After adjusting the choke cable (was very loose), she fired up and idled until I got overly excited and tried to back off the choke. Fired her back up and idled okay for me never having done this before.

My throttle seems to be sticky, so I've decided to replace the cables (there was a kink inside the grip area) and grip/handle as well. Can't hurt anything at any rate. Also on that order is the replacement gasket for the right side case cover. The list of things to do before taking this bike for a ride has gotten much shorter in the last three days. Very exciting times!

Some times it feels like your a one legged man in an arse kicking contest huh. Kewel that you kept on plodding away and got her running. Throttle cables are a good thing to replace, mine have 70,000 plus on them but I occasionally open up the plastic housing and spray some crap in there. If they break they break at the round eye part. Good your on the road to Suck-Scessss....Cheers

Sounds like you not so much winning the battle as beating it to death.

Good luck and keep going. I'm sure you'll enjoy your Gen 3 as much as I do mine when you get there

    Way to go.
Now you are a real engineer. HAHhahaha

When you make videos....Hold the camera still.
Get an editing program if you can afford it.

At least you did not have loud death metal music on the video.
Could not hear the engine running at all.
I was fortunate that on my first video I ever posted. I have a Macintosh and it had an editing program that was easy to use. Came with the computer.

    Three quick questions:
1.) My neutral indicator light stays on even when I'm not in neutral - why could that be?
2.) I'm noticing a slight lag between throttle input and engine response - why could that be?
3.) I"m also noticing bluish smoke at higher revs - why could that be?

With one thing and another I still havn't taken the bike out, so these questions all are based on garage tuning.

    "garage tuning" WTF is that???
The only tuning I know is done correctly and done incorrectly and it does not matter if it was in a home garage or a professional garage.
I have seen incompetent tuning in both places.

As far as your neutral indicator light ...How it works is that a little steel ball on neutral switch ,mounted on the engine case contacts a copper strip on the end of the rotating shifting drum detent plate, and makes connection to ground.

So if the light stays on all the time it means that your neutral indicator is shorted to ground. That is why the bike may not run right is because the battery is always low.

Better get that straightened out right away.
Look for the wire going down to the neutral switch by the shifting drum case.
see if the wire is plugged in and look to see if it is broken. Also unplug it when the key is on and see if the light goes off.
If the light goes off when you unplug it then maybe the switch is bad.

By "garage tuning," I mean that I haven't been out on the bike to assess the results of my bench synching efforts and that I haven't properly adjusted my carbs with a manometer yet. I was able to take the bike out briefly this afternoon throttle delay didn't seem to be there like I remembered. I didn't take it much past 6000 RPM, so I don't know about the blue smoke. It did seem to be running pretty well, however. I haven't been on a bike in the better part of two years prior to this afternoon so I"m probably not the best judge of that, but it felt pretty good after all these months with no results!

    Rogers-
Yes I guess it would feel good just to be out riding!
That would be called tuning without a road test.
Once you get a manometer many of the running and idling problems will go away.
    Makes a major difference.
I use the Motion Pro manometer and it works very well.

Hey - Too high tech posting your progress on Youtube. Neat how we could actually hear and see the bike run. You could ohm out the switch too if you take it off. Bike probabably needs carbs to be balanced. The MotionPro manometer is nice along with their plastic fuel tank. This way you can hang it from your ceiling and run the bike and do your deal without the gas tank tethered to the bikie. Blue smoke? maybe you got some oil in the top of the cylinders when you were trying to break the frozen motor free. Just my 2 cents.

Okay, hard question time: is 25k miles too soon for someone to have cooked the rings on this bike? The smoke is almost certainly oil burning, but I would think that whatever I poured down the spark plug holes would have burned off rather quickly. Also, it would smoke all the time, rather than only under load...is a winter overhaul in my future?

Idle problems - not present at the moment, unless you count being a little lumpy as the carbs haven't been properly synced yet. With as few riding days as I've got left, I will probably wait until the start of next season to tune it properly.

I have a Snap On compression tester I would lend you if you were local. Try to borrow one and see what the cylinders are at.
