If it's got good compression & spark (I have my doubts about the spark, you have to quantify how strong it is outside of a visual inspection) and if you actually see it sucking the starter fluid in & it's still not lighting off it CAN'T be in the fuel induction system (Carbs, fuel pump, ect). I think the seller's story about it running fine until he dropped it is BS, sounds more like somebody tried to fix something and screwed it all up. Even if the ignition and valve timing were a little off but working you should still get a sputter with starter fluid. I know on my 750 It is possible to install the cams so the intake and and exhaust valves open on the completely wrong stroke so it would suck air in through the exhaust and blow it out through the carbs but you would have noticed that when you got a face full of ether... Forget the kill switch & the battery, if it were the switch there would be no spark at all & if it were the battery it just wouldn't turn over. Leads us back to a major ignition component, sounds like the timing is WAY off like something was installed incorrectly (like backwards or even the wires from the harness to the coils are out of order). You have verify that all of the electrical components are correctly connected before you start hot wiring stuff. My only advice is to test and remove every electrical component and reinstall it according to the book then test again. If all the moving parts are in order (Specifically the valve train) then something major has to be loose, fried, or incorrectly installed to keep it from at least sputtering when bypassing the fuel induction system by using starter fluid. You really need to get your hands on the manual and really study it (not just reference it) to gain an understanding of the bikes various systems, so you can hopefully spot something that obviously isn't right. I wish you the best of luck, my first tear down and rebuild was a complete nightmare because I didn't study the manual & ended up making things a lot worse before they got better. "The trick to diagnostics is truly understanding the machine."

Absolutely let me know if you're in the area. I'll throw you $100 just to get it running. But back to my current dilemma, at least before it would try to turn over. When I took the kill switch off and jumped the connection on the button, I got a couple good tries to start and then I think I might have shorted it out as it won't do a thing now when I push the start button. Is there a fuse in the ignition or somewhere else that could have blown? Id like to get it back to a "trying to start" point and call the local motorcycle shop's mobile unit.

Ok so the ignition fuse was blown. Replaced it and after alot of trying, she's up and running. I've only had it running twice so far but it fires right up. After I shut it off, thin streams of smoke come out of the exhaust tips for a few minutes. Could this be from the excess gas I poured into the carbs to get it running the first time or would this be from a more serious issue?

I had the very same thing. Mine smoked so bad I ordered a heat gasket. I kept running it off and on over several days and it cleared. Mine had been dropped. Cycle shop told me if they are laid over for a length of time it may be oil. It may clear . give it some time.

When I had my old VF500 i had the exhaust removed for a bit while I replaced the oil pan.

Some genius decided to place them on their ends in the backyard so they got a couple days of rainwater in them.

When i finally got the bike up and running the exhaust smoked quite a bit during and after running.

....so the bike is running now?

I agree with the above run it on and off for awhile it should clear up.
is it blue smoke, white smoke or a little lingering smoke?
if it's lingering smoke chances are it is a little gas in the bottom of exhaust
and it will evaporate after you run it a few times.
keep a eye on the fluids and let us know how it works out.:thumb:

Yea I'm attributing it to the new battery, plugs, and a crapload of trying. It had been dropped before I got it, possible its oil or some of the excess gas, I'm gonne run it a bunch this week and see if it clears. It's just some regular colored lingering smoke.
