Actually I think the 5th gen VFR as it sits w/ the std 17/43 F/R arrangement is horsepower constrained. At 11,000 RPM it's geared to hit 160 mph in 6th gear. You can't get there unless the engine puts out more power.
The best suggestion to get both a little more low end performance and top end speed would be to do as FJ12rydertoo suggested in the second post. Change the rear to a 45 tooth sprocket and it will rev just a bit higher at all speeds. At 11,000 rpm with 17/45 combination the calculated speed is 153 mph but it would be a better power balance and you may get there.

I was looking at the all in one kits with sprockets and chains. So I was thinking of doing the 45 tooth rear as well. saw other posts about gearing and some people doing +2 for counter and rear sprocket. Eh, their outcome was not what I was looking for. Someone said dropping a tooth in back made it better for their cornering and what gear to use in corners which I liked the idea of. I need to check the stamp on the sprocket or count the teeth but no matter what that chain is being replaced and gears too. just like im doing the air filter and fuel filter as well. No idea what PO did so im giving myself a fresh start. next winter I will probably do the check on lifter spacing just to be sure. On my nighthawk it developed a rattle from a bad tensioner spring and once the cams were out i noticed lifters needed some bleeding work from having some yucky oil in it. PO on that bike thought it was smart to ride the bike 500 miles in 3 years and not change the oil... needless to say first month i had it i did the clutch because i knew there was rust on those pressure plates and sure enough, haha.

Those ultralite sprockets i see still trustworthy? I know it says steel but then I see ultralite and I think alloy or mixture.
