I feel a bit differently. The VFR might keep him alive a bit longer if he's doing high speed runs in the middle of the night. Not the smartest thing to be doing IMO: visibility could hardly be worse, animals, specifically deer and coyotes, are on the move. Bad idea. If you're going to speed, do it in the daytime when you at least have a chance to spot that 2X4 in the middle of the road.

Haha, i didnt see the post about my teeth either.

Look, i really cannot see how this is such a hard shocker. I am asking a simple question and ive had people give me good answer with sites and brand options for chains. This is really getting off topic and getting a little weird. Ive been reading and taking information from this site for months and its a great site with mounds of data on these awesome bikes. Just let things be. Ive honestly never encountered so much attention from a forum in a negative sounding way but its fine. We all have opinions of things and that's fine. I am not trying to be cocky or big as I know where I stand with things. If anything seemed like I was being cocky or have an inflated ego please realize that isnt me. I thought about gearing because I saw someone take their bike to 200mph and where I dont see myself doing that anywhere else but a track, the idea of gearing for a little more fun sounded like a good idea. I take great care of my items and honestly where I live I am considered slow. Me pushing my bike is my business. one time hit at almost red line. I have never put my tach higher. So, either way man i get that we have opinions and such. I'm 25 and I like my 00 vfr 800. I wont discuss gearing anymore since it is such a hot subject. To those that put in some good information I thank you. I am not offended, but I have seen forum wars and i just call this my line.

Thank you for giving me site references and brand ideas. I will continue on.

Oh, haha. Yeah man I look at my rear tire and see chicken stripes so i try to get better at corners. I am pretty decent but no knee dragger, haha. I actually cruise a lot on windy roads especially in fall when the other hundreds of bikers and rockets are out. Me an my buds ride out to Starved rock and so on. Like I said, i dont speed all out daily. and I am sorry that it might have looked like that. Not my intention. I just love the freedom of riding and the wind. That rush though when speeding gets me so focused and once I let off, its like being weightless in my own mind. To each their own though. I had to try it once and i loved it. I wish i was close to a track too. Man, thats a great place to move towards, haha.

VFR isn't going to make a difference at night. You can be doing 90 on a piddly little ninja 250 balls out and you're toast.

Not really, did it ever occur to you that maybe folks here don't want to assist you in anyway to bury your face and collapse your spinal column into a deer carcass?

Some people just refuse to take good advice, especially when it may enable them to live a bit longer.

You can always go to a metal shop and get a spanner wrench cut from a template if you cannot find one. I suspect the 5th and 6th gens share the same size spanner. Please, someone correct me if I am wrong. If you need a template, drop me a PM. I will send you a traced copy.

The part# for the spanner can be found and ordered on any moto parts site that has honda parts fiche for the bike in question.

Also, you don't need the spanner. Put bike on center stand, loosen pinch bolt. Wedge large flathead screwdriver between the notches on the adjustment ring and one of the sprocket nuts. turn the rear wheel with your hand and the chain will loosen or tighten.

I've also used a large screwdriver and hammer. It doesn't take much force, just a tap will move it. It's not something that needs to be done very often, if it does the chain is definitely on its way out.

the best thing that could happen for this vfr is have the old chain removed but not replaced.

    Okay, now that's funny. :eagerness:

He certainly got pretty defensive when his night riding was called into question.

night riding's no joke. I've got auxiliary lights rigged up that puke a beam a 1/4 mile down the road. even with that I won't be exceeding the speed limit by more than 5, more often than not it's 5 under and not on purpose, bike just feels 10 mph faster after dark.

Haha you guys are funny. I honestly take no offense in anything here. its a forum in all honesty.
this is my first chain bike. first one was shaft and lucky me it was well maintained. I was weary of bad fluid and worn gears.
Ive seen spanners all over but since you are all way more involved and have more experience with the vfr, I figured i ask to see if theres a better tool out there. And i dont need one and I can use a screw driver so even better.

When working on the rear caliper i took a look at the adjuster and just figured it needed more than a simple screw driver. Thanks for the tip!
Maybe I'll keep the gearing that's on now. Dunno. It spawned from a pissing contest with some other friends of mine I guess. And I realize it isn't the best way to do things. Either way im getting a new chain that is for sure. Amongst a laundry list of other things.

And seeing this is your first chain bike, if you are going to fit a new chain then fit new sprockets, old sprockets will chew out a new chain

Oooh I did not think about that. Nice. Thanks for the info on that. Yeah that bobbin video makes sense. I'll make sure to do that when servicing the brake system. Hmm, So for sprockets, OEM or any other good known brand or brands to stick away from?

As was mentioned http://sprocketcenter.com/ is a good place to get chain and sprockets. I would go with a steel rear sprocket just for longevity, I don't think the alloy ones last anywhere near as long.

You can change the gearing a bit to gain more top speed by going up a tooth in front or down a couple in back. I wouldn't do both because the VFR simply doesn't have the power to pull stock gearing in 5th and hit the redline.

Sounds good. I assume I would replace both front and rear sprockets with getting a chain. I assume to get steel for both then?

AFAIK the countershaft sprocket only comes in steel so no real choice there. Without know how the PO maintained his bike I would start from scratch and replace chain and sprockets.
