I think it would be a good idea to look at the valve tips while he's in there. A few on my bike were destroyed, and several were close behind. Between my engine, and the parts engine that I have, I ended up with enough valves to get it back together and have it run for a while. I'm noticing some scoring on the cams as well, but I think I'm just going to run it for now, and possibly find replacements later. When I get some money saved up (if ever!) I'll see if the megacycle cams are still available, or if they'll still even mess with reworking mine. I really like this bike, and I think if I get the cams taken care of, and find replacement valves, it would be golden (along with a top end oiling kit) and last for a long time. My goal is to get a newer VFR for my primary bike, and keep this for nostalgic purposes.

    Bike is buttoned up.

There is no more "while he's in there".

If the bike has lasted this long and the bike is running well and is NOT making noise than it should last me the summer.....especially the way I take care of the bike.

If I really wanna keep the bike I'll re-do the motor as a project after I have a nice reliable VFR to ride everyday.

5x5 thanks for the clarification Tink.

Megacycle, as noted, offers both hardfaced cams and rockers for the VF500F.

They are pricey though...$598 for the cams (set of 4) & $62 ea. for the rockers.

    Good deal Slow.

I'm glad you found a trustworthy tech who has a working knowledge of the VF500F.

I think you have a great strategy. Take care of your VF500F and save up for a second more modern steed to add to the stable.

    Good to know.

Now Megacycle solves the problems with Cams and Rockers....what about valves and Valve springs?

Just getting Cams and Rockers wont fix these bikes :frown:

Thanks IC. I think so also.

The guy who's working on my bike, his name is John. He has an entire wall in his workshop covered with pictures of the VF's and VFR's he has reconditioned/fixed and sold.

When I dropped my bike off to him Saturday morning I noticed on of the bikes on his wall was a VF500F2
I couldn't believe there was an F2 somewhere here in North America and he restored it.

    Looked nice too. Bronze wheels.

The valve springs are out there - i.e. VTR250 springs should work for the '84/'85 VF500F (same OEM part number). It only will take a donor head to send to R/D Valve Springs to confirm (they currently offer a VTR250 kit).

I'm keeping an eye out for an '84 set of heads (as this will be a match to my engine) in good condition to send to them.

I certainly wouldn't want to leave the '86 contingent out...If someone has an '86 donor set (really they only need one head - front or rear - to check) I'm sure R/D could work something up.

From my email correspondence with them they seem like a good outfit and are very willing to take a go at finding a match for the '84/'85 or the '86.

Here is the problem to the answer you seek:

    1991 Honda VFR 750

I think I showed that to you a couple months ago. She showed up again and his price has dropped $4-500. Start looking into 1 way plane tickets.

Looks like a well maintained VFR750. Colorado is a bit out of my range (I'm on the East Coast) but it is nice to see there are good deals out there.

Still...I guess I'm a bit of a First Gen junkie.

The VF500F and VF1000R are two designs that - IMHO - hold their own when compared to other V-4 models. I'll probably take some flak here (after all this is VFR World and not VF World) but the mid-80's styling of these two steeds is hard to top.
