Another thing i thought of is just because the coil is hooked up doesn't mean it works. You need to check for 12volts to the coil and voltage coming out. Easiest way to do that is to pull the plug, put it back in the plug wire, ground it to the chassis and turn the engine over looking to see if the plug fires while you do.

The Honda work shop manual has instructions to check your coils.
It takes 5 minutes.
BTW...Coils almost never fail.

It is not the gap between the trigger and the 2 picups but the length of the raised trigger on the outside surface of the starter clutch. The earlier version has 5 or 7 mm (sorry I don´t remember how much) shorter trigger than the later version. This caused the rew limiter kicking on about 2500 rpm´s. The carburettor slides went crazy up and down (it made me crazy also !) and it refused to gear past 2500 rpm´s. After I released the gas everything was just fine ! Very frustrating thing but fortunately I got great advice from sidecar42 ! Again many thanks to him !

BTW...
The Honda workshop manual talks about this modification to the 1985-86 models.
There were lots of changes to the 1985-86 models.
I was lucky when I bought an engine because it was a late 1985 and had all of the upgrades including the gear driven cams.
