A little update. It’s been a bit of a love-hate relationship over the summer, mainly due to two issues. Firstly, the UK weather. The summer has been generally abysmal, with lots of rain and generally rubbish weather which has made it difficult to get out. The second hate factor has been the bike suffering from the intermittent cutting out. It’s been really off-putting, never knowing when or where it’s going to happen. It came to a bit of a head when I was out for a ride last week, and I was at the side of the road 4 times in two hours. So enough was enough.

I actually think it was two separate issues. I’m pretty certain the tank was not venting properly, as a couple of times when opening the tank filler cap I would hear air rushing into the tank. So last weekend I had the filler cap off and I gave it a thorough clean and also drilled out the vent hole to a bigger size. I also replaced the petcock, which was badly gummed up.

It continued to cut out, but now it was just stopping, like the kill switch had been hit or the ignition turned off. So a spent a good few hours, dismantling the ignition switch and start switch, and taking apart every connector in the ignition system. Cleaning them out with liberal amounts of electrical cleaner and using emery paper to clean up the contacts. The only thing I found which might have explained it, was that the main fuse connector did not seem seated quite right and it separated relatively easily. I don’t know for sure if this was the issue but it might have not been making full contact. Anyway, I’ve now ridden 300kms and so far, fingers crossed, no cutouts. I’m not 100% convinced I’ve sorted it, but I am hopeful.

Heck yeah!! Also, if you have not, make a fuel pump relay jumper and keep it on the bike. I had to use mine on my first major ride (even though I did a ton of running on the bench without it) and now it has permanently replaced the relay.

Worth a mention that I found carb balancing made a significant difference to the amount of "rattle" and somewhat counterintuitively mine always sounds quieter with the fairing *off*.

    It's never been *quiet* though.

Haven’t put anything in here, in a while. The good news is that I’ve sorted out the cutting out issues and the bike has been running really well for the last couple of months. Had a fabulous ride down to the south coast to look at some cars and aeroplanes at Goodwood and eat too much. It was a nice twisty road all the way down.

I’ve now started to strip down the front end again as there’s a bit of a small leak from the seals and I think the steering bearings need changing, but will hopefully get it done soon. Hope everyone on here is all good.

As you’re replacing the head race, tapered roller bearings will make a big difference

Good to see you’ve been out and about on the bike

It is a little quiet here, probably because we are riding instead of fixing. Hahaha I did tapered bearing but messed up because I’m a moron. That is a next year problem. I think the race did not seat all of the way and I have a low speed (5-10mph) bouncing motion. Does not affect highway or canyon, just coming to stop signs.

    Go Brighton Hove Albion!

Here you go @RogueRC24, this picture’s for you! (If you can see it)

A lovely ride down to Brighton, taking the scenic route there and the fast route back.

Hell yeah! I spent some great afternoons on the pier with my mum and wife. If you go further towards the pier you would be standing on a spot where I nearly got into a fight with a local. lol The marina is fun to drive in and out of (cool tunnel), although they put an Asda (?) down there, so there is a flood of people now. Man good memories! I miss England.

    Thanks Wheezy!!

In case anyone interested can't see.

    Damn it!

My bike’s cutting out again. Happened twice in the last few weeks. Both times got the bike home ok. When I got back I checked the battery and there was 18.8v across the battery terminals at idle, so I presume that my 4 month old reg/rec is breaking down. I’ve ordered a MOSFET so I will do that upgrade over the next couple of weeks. Not sure if this would be why the bike would cut out again as it’s not part of the ignition system but maybe it just screws up the electrical system enough to breakdown the ignition temporarily?

Make sure your stator is good while you've got it apart, check for even resistance on all 3, no shorts to ground. Hard wire the stator while you're at it, and bypass that red connector to charge straight to the battery from the regrec. You should also verify your main red connector and all wires near the battery honestly. At high voltages stuff likes to cook.

Trying to troubleshoot what messes up when you're hitting 18v is not worth your time. Get it charging right and then troubleshoot from there. If y0u're lucky nothing else fried.

Thanks ATX. I’ve checked and no shorts to ground from the three stator wires. My multimeter isn’t very good so I can’t get the ohms resolution down low enough to check it they are all in the range specified in the manul, which is a pain. That said, no scorch or burn marks anywhere.

I am going to have to buy a new battery. It’s currently at 17.5v, so seems like I’ve knackered it.
