I ride too. While visiting Winnipeg several years ago,. I was riding along a street that fell somewhere between residential and feeder. A car was pulling out of an alley with a middle aged woman at the wheel. I kid you not. From a distance of maybe 20 feet at the most, we made eye contact. Not just looking each other's way. I looked her in the eye and she looked me in the eye as she pulled out of that alley right in front of me. Broad daylight, nice weather and I had a light on my bike and wore bright cycle gear.

The a couple years later, in Chilliwack and similar weather and roadway, with yet better lighting, a car (30's male) pulled out of a side road in front of me. It was so close that when I looked down over my right knee, I was looking at the top surface of his front bumper. He didn't even look. I know this because I was trying to make eye contact. I had no chance. He came racing up to the stop sign there, and if he did stop, it was barely, then punched it right out in front of me when I was maybe 5 feet away. I think I squirted a bit that time but fortunately no contact.

That is two of so many close calls on the bicycle.

    THEY DON'T FUCKING CARE!

Seriously... you do the "Brake Check" thing?
Something I'd NEVER do. Bike, car, truck.... Nope.
My attitude is to abstain from anything that could result in damage to my vehicles.
When there are obvious assholes nearby on the road, my answer is to get away from them, quickly. Buh-Bye.

I tap my brakes a few times and if they don't back off I tap them a little harder, don't get me wrong I don't slam on my brakes just give them a wake up call--- and never on my bike---I'm usually gone after a minute or two if they don't respond to my back off hand jester.
Commute 350 miles a week on my bike so it happens often out here in LaLa land
