I know this should go in the "What Gets Your Goat" section but have you noticed that in movies, there can be a fire fight in an enclosed space and all the combatants come out talking to each other in normal voices? I have a 12 gauge that I loath to fire outside with no ear protection. The noise would be the only thing stopping be from blowing a hole in an intruder. I can't imagine the hearing damage that gun would cause firing it in the house!

 

I'm with you on that. My buddy and I always crack up whenever they show fire in outer space. Same with loud explosions in space. Without air (oxygen) no fire and no ability to push the sound waves either. Interesting though, JJ Abrams, when he did the Star Trek reboot movie he felt the same way and decided to remove some of the explosion sound affects to make it more "realistic". They found though that without these effects, it made it less believable/enjoyable. So he compromised and made the external shots i.e. The ones from space POV, quiet but the ones inside the ship with the sound effects.

On the hearing issue, my wife belongs to a hearing impairment group and one of the biggest groups of people joining at one point were veterans of the Iraq war. So many of them suffered hearing loss due to the battle field environment. Not that I like comparing movies to real life but to in Black Hawk Down, they actually have one character lose his hearing after his partner fired off a machine gun right near his ear. It was kind of humorous but a sad reality that we don't really get to know about.
