I don't know if this is a cultural thing. I was asking on another forum, non bike related, about advise getting my first bike and the answer I got from Americans were 250-300cc bikes which felt a bit weird for me as I was practicing on a CB600 in the driving school. When I got there I hadn't driven any motorcycles and not owned a moped (50cc) but borrowed my friend's some 25 years back. They threw me on a CB600 and told me to be careful with the thottle and out I went on a small co-cart track to get to know the bike.
I ended up buying an ER6 and after a year and roughly 5000 miles I bouight a VFR.
You can most certainly do wheelies on both the CB600 and the ER6 but they're nice bikes IMHO, a lot easier to handle than the VFR when it gets tight.
The VFR 800 is quite heavy and the turning circle isn't the smallest you'll find. Is it a good starter bike? I don't know but I sure like mine :)
I put them both away for winter the other month and I drove both to the gas station for a fill up. That made it obvious how much larger the VFR is compared to the ER6 which make the ER6 a lot more nimble in the turns. (keeping the ER6 for the wife to learn do drive on :))

Most of this "advice" is coming from US sources. There are no restrictions on what we are able to buy motorcycle wise. In some other parts of the world, it is mandated as to what one can buy or ride.

Not IMO a good or bad thing but the condition exists. Kind of like going to one of the less civilized places where if you get busted nicking shit, you lose a hand. Effective, but I sure don't want to live there.

This is also the reason I am not voting for The Donald or moving to Canada.

We have restrictions in Sweden, but that's on the license side. When you're 16 you can get an A1 license which allow you to ride a 125cc bike (in general terms, there are other conditions too I think it's 15kW and max 0.1 kW per kilogram bike weight). When you're 18 you can get an A2 license which allow you to ride a bike with maximum 35kW and 0.2kW per kilogram of bike weight. When your 24, or if you've had an A2 license for two years whichever comes first, you can get an A license whcih allow you to ride any bike.

Those are generally the restrictions I was talking about. Most of them seem to be there for stated but unexplained reasons. In Sweden do those restrictions hold for racing?

Here it is suggested that new riders take a Motorcycle Safety Course usually in cooperation with the individual state's motor vehicle arm. It is not mandatory but a good idea other than that I know of no restrictions on the state levels. Perhaps some of the individual communities have restrictions. This would include some of the religious communities in some parts of the US and of course nudists during the winter months.

    uff da!
