    Some good progress today.

Finished the rear brake MC rebuild and re-installed. Worked out OK.

Now that both front and rear MC's are working, the next brake components that I need to attend to are the brake lines.

I removed the end of each one where it attaches to the caliper....both of them in front and the single one in back - and no fluid comes out.

Then I completely removed the rear one and couldn't get any air through it. With the brake fittings on the ends it's not easy to attached an air hose but I managed and it just wasn't happening. So I have the rear one soaking in vinegar right now.

I was thinking maybe I should get a set of new ones. But not seeing them for sale. Even on Partszilla they are NLA. Maybe it's just my Google search-foo is poor today (?)

On the outside they look OK. Can anyone tell me the best way to clean one out on the inside, other than what I'm doing? Should I use something other than vinegar like Simple Green?

    Next post --- the calipers.....

OK, I went ahead and removed the rear brake caliper.

It still had fluid inside which poured out and looked OK, except a little discolored.

Should I try to bench test it before doing anything else?

Gently try to lever/push the pistons back in...just to see if they will move?

    TIA for any opinions......

I'm not opposed to doing a rebuild but maybe it's not necessary (?)

On another note...........I tried to run her today just briefly to see what it would do.

I forgot to remove the 4 shop towels from the intakes.

I was surprised it actually ran pretty good - and the towels didn't get sucked in either!

On your 2nd pic... see all that crusty shit around the pistons and seals? That not a good sign. Get a working master cylinder going, remove the pads, and pump the pistons out a bit. If one wants to move but not the other one, block the one that's moving with something. Inspect for pitting / corrosion. Clean up a crud ring if present (likely). With the bleeder valve opened, if the pistons can be pressed back in with your hand, you might be ok. If not, pump them all the way out to clean everything up and inspect the seals and pistons.

This all of course if you can get fluid thru your lines. That also does not sound promising. I wouldn't run them.

    Thanks, Capt.

I ordered some generic brake lines pretty close to the right length from Amazon, which are supposed to be delivered on Monday.

I will continue to look for "better" lines but for now just want to keep things going.

It's funny how many times you hear the advice to replace your brake lines but it's not always that easy if you can't get them!

I read a comment about using a guitar string to clean them out but yeah....much better to just replace.

On the carbs....OK will do this tomorrow. I know I have an old clutch line I could use just to move the pistons out.

    Thanks again! ;)

Why do part of the job? Be sure each component works properly while you're into it. Those pistons don't look rust/pit free to me.

Generic brake lines? How are reviews on them? I'm cheaper than anyone, but I'm not sure I'd buy generic brake components or tires!

Point taken but I wouldn't use them if I didn't think they'd do the job.

    And the reviews were fine.

Will post future updates as appropriate.....;)

The generic brake lines arrived and so far so good. The ends match up correctly.....lengths a tad longer but not bad.

They offer 3 sizes (lengths) and I got 4 of the shortest ones (60mm). Will report back after installation and with pics....

    $9.99 each: AMAZON

No idea about quality, but they have a pretty decent OEM look to them.

Bezos does. lol If I had that kind of money I would build myself a race track to FIA/FIM standards and only invite friends. These hoses would be good for bike flips if they work well.

Sorry for the thread jack. :(

I've learned to always see if they have something I'm looking for. It's truly amazing what they offer. I bought stock steel for when I did repairs on my boat trailer. Local places either didn't have what I wanted or required some huge minimum order. Next time you need any metal stuff...check them out - I'm not kidding!
