:faint2: holy cow, were those with the newer crown vics ('03 and newer)? Mine's a '03 and fortunately I don't need to go on gravel but I find it surprisingly capable for such a big and heavy car. I can take on curves faster than my previous Nissan Sentra! And the Mercury is discontinued as well. Last official year is 2011. It's just as well because Ford is making cars specifically just for law enforcement that supposedly handle better, deliver more power and is more fuel efficient.

Nah. I retired in 03. They were police packages though so their suspension may have been a bit tighter than the family sedan. But the Explorers were just off the showroom floor models. Yup, hit a little wash board with either of those and the fight was on to keep it from going into the ditch. They were just crap on rougher gravel roads while the Blazers, Jimmies, Suburbans and Impalas would do 100 without a concern.

Those Crown Vic's and Merc's were old time crap technology. The only thing they had going was they were rear wheel drive, they were heavy and they were cheap! With a decent package they were right around 20 grand. Hard to sell to the general public at the end. Big sales were to police departments and cab companies. The new police specific squad cars and SUV's are made right here in Chicago at the Torrence ave Ford plant. They look pretty cool and I hear the local police love the SUV's because they handle well and have extra room for the computer equipment and are all wheel drive.

The PD Crown Vics and the public Crown Vics were the same rigs but with several differences. The new PD Explorers come in at way over 40K. USD.

:rip: Grand Marquis/Crown Victoria/Town Car...When I do get behind the wheel of my dads or my wifes, I like to accelerate up to the "ton" on the highway/bi-ways.

If you got the time and energy, burn them a new arsehole!

They are using some weird looking Ford front wheel drive products for the constabulatory down South here.

I know a guy that finagled to buy two brand new Crown Vic Police Interceptor, but got one in return. He said it was the best car he's ever bought. Over 150k and he's done nothing but normal maintenance (Oil, plugs, tires, & brakes). Thing has been beat to death by his two kids. When he goes to Chicago he drives with his foot on the floor, just hangs a shirt & a wide brimmed hat in the back seat. Other cops just watch him go by.
